Saturday's SoCon Basketball results

There was a couple of surprises in Saturday's men's basketball action in the SoCon, and we now have a new number one team.  Can you guess who it is?


Chattanooga at Furman
In the biggest upset of the day, Furman's Devin Sibley scored 18 points as the Paladins broke Chattanooga's eight-game winning streak 70-55 on Saturday. The Paladins shot 50% from the floor to beat the preseason league favorite Mocs. Chattanooga shot 43 percent (20 of 47) from the field, but were only were 9 of 19 from the free throw line and gave up 20 turnovers.  Johnathan Burroughs-Cook led Chattanooga with 13.
Attendance: 1,651.

Mercer at The Citadel
Mercer's Stephon Jelks scored 24 points with 17 rebounds to lead the Bears past The Citadel 91-80 on Saturday for the Bulldogs' fifth straight loss. Mercer out-rebounded the Bulldogs 51-28 and held them well below their per-game average of 90.2 points. Connor Schroeder led the Bulldogs with 14 points

Samford at Wofford
Wofford's Spencer Collins scored 12 points in the final 2 minutes to pull Wofford out of a 64-55 deficit and propel the Terriers to a 69-64 victory over Samford on Saturday afternoon. Collins scored
 25 points, was 7 of 11 from the field and knocked down all five of his 3-point attempts in Wofford's third straight Southern Conference victory of the season. Darius Jones-Gibson finished with 17 points to lead Samford.

UNCG at ETSU
The Bucs' Ge'Lawn Guyn scored a career-high 28 points to lead ETSU to a 86-83 victory over UNCG on Saturday, but it as T.J. Cromer that scored the winning 3-pointer with eight seconds left. Francis Alonso led UNCG with 21 points.

VMI at Western Carolina
Western's Rhett Harrelson scored 23 pointsto lead the Catamounts past VMI 73-52 on Saturday to pick up their first SoCon win. The Cats took control late in the first half, when Harrelson hit three consecutive 3-pointers to break a 17-17 tie and start a 22-7 run toward a 39-24 lead at the half. Western made 25 of 53 field-goal attempts including eight 3-pointers. Mike Brown scored 17 and Torrion Brummitt 11. Julian Eleby led the Keydets with 13 points
