Saturday was the opening of conference play for all the SoCon teams, with all 10 teams playing for that first conference win..
Chattanooga at The Citadel
Chattanooga's Tre' McLean scored 18 points to lead Chattanooga over The Citadel 84-78 in the Southern Conference opener for both teams on Saturday. The Bulldogs led 49-43 with 15 minutes left. but the Moc went on a 11-0 run for a 54-49 lead, but held on for the win.
ETSU at Western Carolina
The Bucs' T.J. Cromer scored 16 points as East Tennessee State beat Western Carolina 82-66. The Bucs led 48-32 at halftime by shooting 63%. However the Cats battled back on the strength of a 11-2 run, to get within 55-45 with about 12 minutes left. But that was a close as the Cat would get, as the Bucs pulled away in the final minutes. Mike Brown led the Cats with 22 points. as Torrion Brummitt added 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Catamounts were held to 3-of-28 shooting from 3-point range and 32% shooting overall.
Samford at Mercer
Mercer's Phillip Leonard scored 15 points to lead Mercer over Samford by a final score of 69-50 in the opening SoCon game for both teams. The Bears had a 22-4 run to end the first half. Samford never recovered. Jamal Shabazz and Christen Cunningham led Samford with 15 points apiece.
VMI at Furman
Furman's Stephen Croone scored 22 points as Furman rolled over VMI 85-57 on Saturday. Kris Acox added 15 points and six rebounds. Furman had 11 steals as part of 19 VMI turnovers. Julian Eleby scored 18 points with six rebounds for the Keydets.
UNCG at Wofford
Spencer Collins scored 25 points, Eric Garcia added 17, and Wofford made 11 of 23 shots from beyond the arc in an 87-76 win over UNC Greensboro in a Southern Conference opener Saturday night. RJ White scored 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting for UNC Greensboro (4-10, 0-1). Diante Baldwin added 14 points, and Kayel Locke and Marvin Smith each tallied 13.
