Highlights from Thursday's games:

UNCG  72 -  Western Carolina 47
Western Carolina was completely dominated in the opening of Southern Conference play, the Cats have not beaten UNCG in Cullowhee since January of 2016, that's seven straight defeats in Cullowhee by the Spartans. In today's game, Western Carolina had two players finish in double figures but cold shooting in the second half ultimately proved to be the Catamounts' undoing in a 72-47 loss to UNCG in the Southern Conference opener for both squads. UNCG improves to 7-7 and 1-0 while WCU drops to 7-7 and 0-1. Tyzhaun Claude led WCU with 13 points and was joined in double figures by Vonterius Woolbright with 10 points. Claude snagged a team-best seven rebounds while Woolbright distributed four assists. The Spartans finished the game 26-for-53 (49.1 percent) from the field, 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) behind the 3-point line, and 13-for-20 (65 percent) at the free throw line. WCU shot a season-low 20 percent from the field, going 12-for-60.

VMI 62 -  Furman  85
Marcus Foster tallied a career-high 23 points and added eight rebounds to lead Furman to an 85-62 victory over VMI in the Southern Conference men's basketball opener for both schools Thursday night at Timmons Arena. The redshirt-junior connected on 8-of-15 shots, including 7-of-12 behind the arc, and dished out two assists without committing a turnover as the Paladins improved to 10-4 overall and 1-0 in the league with their third consecutive victory. VMI slipped to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in the SoCon.

ETSU  73 -  Wofford  71
A new season meant a new look for the Buccaneers. After dropping its last five games by a combined 14 points, the ETSU men’s basketball team flipped the script in Thursday’s Southern Conference opener. Behind a 20-point performance by Justice Smith and Jordan King scoring his 1,000th career point, the Buccaneers got a final stop by Josh Taylor in the final seconds, carrying ETSU to a 73-71 win at Wofford inside Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Bucs, led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but saw the Terriers charge back to tie things up at 65; however, King stepped up with back-to-back threes – the final resulting in the milestone bucket – and the Blue and Gold never relinquished the lead. After Wofford got the ball back following a traveling call on King with four seconds left, Jackson Sivills was fed the rock in the paint but Taylor defended the play to perfection as the Buccaneer forward never let him get a shot off as time expired sending the Buccaneer faithful into a frenzy.

Chattanooga  68 - The Citadel 76
The Citadel shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the second half to run past Chattanooga, 76-68, in the Southern Conference opener for both teams Thursday evening inside McAlister Field House. The Citadel went 15-of-24 from the field, including 7-of-9 from beyond the arc in the second half. On the flip side, the Bulldogs held the Mocs to just 13-of-33 in the game's final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs finished the game 19-of-22 from the free-throw line, including 13-of-14 in the second half.

Here's a recap look at Thursday's non-conference games, two games the SoCon could have (and maybe should have) won, but fell short:

VMI 77 - Fordham 80
The VMI men's basketball team nearly snapped Fordham University's long winning streak Thursday, but the Keydets fell 80-77 in an overtime thriller at Rose Hill Gym. Senior Sean Conway drilled a three-pointer with 20 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 68 all and stole the ball in the closing seconds to force overtime. The Rams, winners of 10 straight and 11-1 on the season entering the game, again pulled ahead by three in the closing seconds of overtime and had the ball with under 15 seconds to play. The Keydets forced a turnover and had three chances from downtown to force a second overtime but fell just short.

UNCG 64 -  Eastern Kentucky 68
UNCG men's basketball's Dante Treacy posted a team-high 15 points as the Spartans dropped a Thursday afternoon contest to Eastern Kentucky, 68-64, at Baptist Health Arena. Treacy posted a 4-of-9 effort from the field while shooting 5-of-6 from the foul line. Brown-Jones finished with 12 points, shooting 4-of-7 from the field and 4-of-4 from the foul line. He also posted five rebounds. Leyte contributed 10 points, shooting 5-for-7 from field goals. The Spartans shot 42.3 percent from the field for the contest, shooting exactly that percentage in each period. UNCG held a 37-34 advantage on the glass over the Colonels. The game totaled ten ties and 16 lead changes.

A recap of Wednesday's games:

Chattanooga 65 - Georgia 72
Despite leading for nearly 35 minutes, the Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team suffered its second-straight defeat after falling 72-65 on the road to SEC-foe Georgia inside the Stegeman Coliseum on Wednesday afternoon in Athens, Ga. Following the loss, Chattanooga concludes its non-conference stretch with an 8-5 record. Georgia improves to 9-3 overall and 7-0 at home this season after the victory. Chattanooga took a 33-30 lead into halftime after opening the game with an early 14-6 lead behind a lethal three-point attack. The Mocs held the lead all the way until 9:23 left in the contest before Georgia finished the game on a 17-5 run.

Mercer 82 - Troy 79
For the first time this season, Troy falls in Trojan Arena, 82-79, to Mercer after falling short in the closing minutes on Wednesday evening. A two-game win streak is snapped for the Trojans as their non-conference schedule ends at 8-5. The Bears (7-6) secure their first win at Troy since 1999 to conclude back-to-back wins.

Samford 56 - Belmont 79
The Samford Men's Basketball team wrapped up its nonconference slate with a 79-56 setback at Belmont University on Wednesday evening. 11 Bruins scored as the hosts forced 17 turnovers and scored 40 points in the paint. Five of Samford's six losses coming in had been by one possession or overtime, so a fiercely-contested game against one of the Southern Conference favorites was anticipated.  Belmont shot 59 percent (31-for-53) from the field – including 8-for-13 from 3-point distance in the second half.

ETSU 68 -  LSU 72

For the second straight year, ETSU was looking to head into Christmas with a road win versus a Southeastern Conference foe, but this time around the Buccaneers couldn’t unwrap an early gift. A year removed from taking down Georgia in Athens, ETSU men’s basketball had a chance to win at LSU for the second time in four seasons. Down by two with the ball and 18.9 seconds remaining, Jordan King missed a jumper and the Tigers iced the game with a pair of free throws in the closing seconds, as the Bucs dropped another close contest with a 72-68 decision Wednesday night inside LSU's Maravich Center.

Seven Catamounts scored in double-figures as Western Carolina men's basketball scored a season-high 117 points to close out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 117-50 win over Toccoa Falls on Tuesday afternoon on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center. WCU improves to 7-6 overall. Wofford 67 - Texas A&M 62
Down four points with four minutes to go, the Wofford College men's basketball team used an 8-0 run to take the lead and made clutch free throws in the final minute for a 67-62 win at Texas A&M on Tuesday afternoon at Reed Arena. The Aggies built a 42-32 advantage early in the second half, but the Terriers answered with a 14-2 run to take a 46-44 lead. After trading the lead five more times, Wofford trailed 57-53 with 4:09 left in the game. The Terriers had five points by B.J. The Citadel 74 - North Carolina Central 82
The Citadel men's basketball team dropped its final non-conference road game of the season, falling 81-74 at NC Central Tuesday night in Durham, North Carolina.  The Citadel got on the board first with a basket from Elijah Morgan, but a 4:42 scoring drought allowed the Eagles to open up a seven-point lead.  After Austin Ash hit a three-pointer to tie the game, the Eagles went on a 12-0 run to take a double-digit lead with just over four minutes to play in the half. The Bulldogs would get as close as eight points as Colby McAllister scored in transition, then found Ash on the wing for a three-pointer. Turnovers continued to be the story as The Citadel turned the ball over 14 times in the first half, leading to 11 NCCU points. The Citadel would pull to within three points on an Elijah Morgan three-pointer, but the Eagles would not allow the Bulldogs to get any closer.

A recap of Tuesday's games

Middle Georgia State 62 - Mercer 100
Jalyn McCreary and the Mercer men's basketball team played to an exciting 100-62 win for the Bibb County School District students in attendance at the game against Middle Georgia State on Tuesday morning at Hawkins Arena. Mercer University Athletics hosted an Education Day for Bibb County students to envision a path to college and have an experiential physical education learning opportunity. While McCreary shined in the scoring aspects, the team as a whole excelled in all areas. 31 assists for the Bears set a new program-record for single-game assists, beating the previous mark of 28 set against Valparaiso in 2013. Luis Hurtado Jr. recorded a team-high seven assists along with 12 points.

UNCG 58  -   #11 Arkansas 65
The UNCG men's basketball team was persistent in a Southeastern Conference (SEC) battle Tuesday night, but No. 9 Arkansas found itself on top, 65-58, in front of a sellout crowd at Bud Walton Arena. Three Spartans scored in double figures, including Donovan Atwell with 12, Dante Treacy with 11, and Kobe Langley with 10. UNCG led at the half, 26-21. This was the eighth game out of the Spartans' 10 this season that they have led at the half. The Razorbacks' 21 points was the least number of points in the first half this season. This was the lowest scoring first half for Arkansas since January 16, 2021 when it played Alabama and was down 42-19 at the half. This is also the fourth game all season that the Razorbacks were down at the half.

Milwaukee 76 - Chattanooga 88
Chattanooga improves to 6-3 on the season following the 88-76 win over Milwaukee for their fourth-straight win for the Mocs, the win snapped the Panthers five-game win streak as they fell to 7-4. The Mocs connected on 13 threes during the victory and finished 13-of-34 (38.2%). Chattanooga forced 12 Milwaukee turnovers in the first half, and outscored the Panthers 20-0 in points off turnovers in that span, and finished the game forcing 15 total turnovers, a season-best +7 in the margin. UTC posted 12 steals in the victory, the most this season and ties for the most since recording 13 steals at Tennessee Tech on November 30, 2020.

High Point 85 - Furman 82
High Point's Zach Austin converted on a pair of free throws with six seconds left and Mike Bothwell's attempt at a game-tying three-pointer fell short as the Panthers edged the Paladins 85-82 in non-conference men's basketball action on Tuesday evening at Timmons Arena. The loss halted Furman's four-game winning streak and dropped the Paladins to 6-3, while High Point won its fifth in a row to up its record to 8-1. Bothwell, who totaled 20 points in the opening half, paced the Paladins with a season-high 29 points and seven rebounds, while Garrett Hien netted 15 and Pegues contributed 12.

Coastal Carolina 61 - Wofford 71
Down eight points with eight minutes to play in the second half, the Wofford College men's basketball team went on a 22-4 run to end the game for a 71-61 victory over Coastal Carolina on Tuesday night at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. An 8-0 run that spanned the first and second halves gave Wofford a 34-32 lead after the opening possession of the second half. Coastal Carolina used a 12-0 run to take a 52-44 advantage, but Wofford responded with a 12-0 run as well for a 61-57 lead. Over the last four minutes, the Terriers had a 10-4 advantage to secure the win.

Chattanooga 82 - Gardner-Webb 71
The Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team used another dominating second-half effort on both sides of the floor to notch its third-straight victory after defeating Gardner-Webb 82-71 inside Paul Porter Arena on Saturday afternoon in Boiling Springs, N.C. Following the win, Chattanooga improves to 5-3 on the season and has successfully eliminated a halftime deficit in each of its last three wins. Gardner-Webb falls to 2-6 after the defeat in its home opener of the 2022-23 season. Trailing 39-38 at halftime, UTC out-scored GWU 44-32 in the second half and limited the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 27.3% (9-of-33) mark from the field including a 18.2% (2-of-11) tally from three during that span. "I'm just really proud of our guys. I have a ton of respect for Gardner-Webb and what they've done over the recent years, Coach [Tim] Craft does a fantastic job … we had a lot of guys contribute today," said head coach Dan Earl.

South Carolina State 76 - Furman 88
Sophomore Alex Williams scored all of his career-high 15 points during a 19-4 second-half run to lead Furman to an 88-76 victory over South Carolina State in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena. The victory marked the fourth straight for the Paladins, who improved to 6-2 on the season, and their 30th triumph in their last 31 regular season non-conference matchups inside Timmons. South Carolina State slipped to 1-8. Furman shot 56.1% on the day and made good on 16-of-19 trips to the foul line. The Paladins managed a 33-30 rebounding edge and overcame 20 turnovers that led to 19 Bulldog points. Jordan Simpson came off the bench to lead South Carolina State with 14 points. Raquan Brown and Gary added 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Bulldogs shot 47% and notched 12 steals but connected on just 4-of-16 three-point attempts.

Charleston 70 - The Citadel 57
The Citadel freshman guard Madison Durr scored a career-high 20 points to lead in the Bulldogs in a 79-57 setback to the College of Charleston Saturday afternoon in front of 4,630 fans inside McAlister Field House. The Bulldogs got off to a hot start as David Maynard and Stephen Clark hit from in close to give the Bulldogs the 4-0 advantage. The Cougars were able to respond with a 12-0 run to take the lead. The Citadel kept the game close for the majority of the first half as Madison Durr hit a layup and Clark made a free throw to pull within six. CofC pushed the halftime advantage to 14 points with a 10-2 run to close the half. The Bulldogs got the scoring going in the second half with a three-pointer from the corner by Maynard. AJ Smith pulled the Dogs within 12 five minutes into the half on a three-point play. The Cougars were able to eventually wear the Bulldogs down over the final 10 minutes of the game for the final margin of victory.

Navy 72 - VMI 80
Senior Sean Conway scored a career-high 28 points Saturday as the VMI men's basketball team upset The Naval Academy 80-72 from Cameron Hall in non-conference play. The victory is the first Division I win for first-year VMI head coach Andrew Wilson. Navy (5-3) finished 21-11 in 2021-22 and advanced to the Patriot League Tournament finals. VMI earned just its second win in the 25-game all-time series, the last coming in 2004. The Keydets shot a sizzling 56 percent from three-point range (14-25); including 6-7 from Conway and 4-5 from freshman Tyler Houser. After trailing 9-2 to open the game, VMI outscored Navy 41-15 over the next 14 minutes to take a 43-24 edge just before intermission. The Keydets opened a 20-point lead (52-32) with 17 minutes left in the game on a three pointer by Houser. Navy cut into the advantage and trailed by just six in the closing minutes, but VMI sealed the game from the free-throw line. VMI committed just seven turnovers on the afternoon, down from an average of 14.6 the first eight games of the season. Houser finished with 16 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Devin Butler scored 13 points, hitting 3-of-6 from downtown. Asher Woods netted 11 points; Rickey Bradley, Jr. had five points, five rebounds and five assists. Austin Inge led Navy with 21 points Tyler Nelson scored 15 points for the visitors and Daniel Deaver snared a game-high 12 rebounds.

UNCG 65 - Elon 61
Mikeal Brown-Jones scored a career-high 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting as the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team earned a Saturday afternoon victory over Elon, 65-61. The victory over the Phoenix marks the fourth consecutive victory over Elon, dating back to the 2017-18 season. Both sides traded the lead five times in the first five minutes of the first half with the Spartans holding a one-point lead, 7-6, five minutes into the contest. The layup at the 15:13 mark from Kobe Langley sparked a 13-0 run that lasted the next 4:07 as the Spartans exploded for a 12-point lead, 18-6. UNCG's lead briefly dipped to eight with 9:40 remaining in the first half, but the Spartans reclaimed a ten-point lead 20 seconds later thanks to a layup from Brown-Jones.

Jacksonville State 63 - ETSU 61
Despite leading by seven midway through the second half, the ETSU men’s basketball team couldn’t hold on as Jacksonville State hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 59 seconds remaining and the Buccaneers suffered a 63-61 setback to the Gamecocks on Saturday evening inside Freedom Hall. After pulling within one on a Justice Smith (Lyons, N.Y.) baseline jumper with 43 seconds to go, the Bucs forced a turnover on a steal by Smith, but he stepped out of bounds with 19 seconds showing on the clock, forcing the Blue and Gold to come up empty. ETSU was forced to foul and Jacksonville State’s Skyelar Potter made one of two free throws, giving the Blue and Gold another opportunity. Unfortunately, Jaden Seymour’s (Charlotte, N.C.) open three-point look from the left wing couldn’t fall and Jacksonville State walked away with the two-point non-conference victory.

Wofford 62 - Vanderbilt 65
On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College men's basketball team was unable to end the game on top in a back-and-fourth loss by a 65-62 margin to Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium. Down 34-25 at the half, Wofford used a 10-0 run to take the lead to start the second half. After the Terriers had a one-point lead four different times in the half, the Commodores had a one-point lead with just under a minute to go and were able to close out the contest from the free throw line. With the win the Terriers' record moves to 5-4 to start the season, while the Commodores even their record at 4-4.
