Game #16 - Furman



The Catamounts return home to the Ramsey Center, to face the preseason favorite Furman Paladins, in the Ingles SoCon Game of the Week. Saturday's game will mark only the fifth time the Cats have played in the Ramsey Center this season.

Furman sports a 7-0 record versus Western Carolina under head coach Bob Richey. Furman, ranked No. 7 in the latest College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 and a SoCon-best No. 72 in the latest NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) Rankings.

The Paladin will come to Cullowhee on a two-game conference skid, the losses to VMI and ETSU marked the first time Furman dropped back-to-back SoCon games since January of 2019. Furman hasn't lost three straight league games since February of 2016.  The Paladins boast one of the most experienced starting lineups in the country with two seniors and three juniors. The lineup of senior Alex Hunter, junior Mike Bothwell, fifth-year senior Clay Mounce, redshirt-junior Noah Gurley, and junior Jalen Slawson have combined to appear in 451 games and a record 294 starts for the Paladins.

The Paladins are averaging 83.4 points per game, hitting 49.4% of their field goal attempts and only giving up 69.6 ppg. As a team, the Paladins are converting 73.7% of their free-throw attempts.

The Keydets own an 8-1 record in games played in Lexington, with their only loss coming against Samford. The Keydets are averaging 81 points per game while giving up 77 ppg. VMI is averaging 40% of their three-point attempts or 11 made threes a game, that combined with an 80% team average in free throws

VMI has three players scoring in double digits, led by Greg Parham with almost 20 points per game, followed by Jake Stephens hitting 14 ppg, and Kamdyn Curfman with 12 ppg.  

VMI's Greg Parham was named the SoCon Men's Basketball Player of the Week after averaging 25.0 points per game and shooting 50 percent from the floor. Parham finished the week 18-for-36 from the floor and 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, hitting a pair of three-pointers in each contest. He leads the league in scoring in SoCon games at 25.1 points per game.  Parham's selection this week marks the Keydets' first consecutive SoCon Player of the Week honors since Jason Bell claimed back-to-back awards in weeks two and three of the 1997-98 season.

The Catamounts finally return to Cullowhee for the first time since December 6, 2020, for a one-game homestand.   ETSU travels across the mountains to face the Cats in the second game of this year's series between the two schools in the basketball version of the "Blue Ridge Border Battle".

ETSU enters Wednesday's game having won the last 12 games with the Catamounts. The two teams opened the Conference season against each other in Johnson City on December 30th. In that game, the Bucs used a 17-4 second-half run and held off the usual late in the game, Catamount rally. 

ETSU basketball coach Jason Shay announced on Tuesday that the Bucs will be without freshman guard Marcus Niblack. Niblack has not played since ETSU’s Dec. 30 game against Western Carolina. “Marcus is currently not able to play as we work through a non-disciplinary matter,” Shay said  In nine appearances, Niblack has scored 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for ETSU this season. 

Through 12 games, the Bucs are 7-5 and 3-1 in SoCon play. In the Bucs’ seven wins, they are averaging 75.6 points, while holding opponents to 61.4 points. In their five losses, the Bucs are averaging 61.8 points and allowing 73.0 points. In the seven wins, the Bucs have scored 121 points (17.3 per game) off turnovers and 86 second-chance points (12.3), while allowing just 81 points (11.6 per game) off turnovers and 50 second-chance points (7.1 per game). However, in the setbacks, the Bucs are allowing 83 points off turnovers (16.6) and 73 second-chance points (14.6), while ETSU is scoring 76 points off turnovers (15.2) and 37 second-chance points (7.4) in the losses.

Samford is coming off back-to-back games with UNCG, and the Spartans defeated the Bulldogs 87-63 on Thursday, Jan. 14, followed by an 82-70 loss on Saturday. The Bulldogs come into the WCU game having lost 4 straight conference games, after beating VMI in Birmingham to open conference play. Christian Guess, a 6-6 junior guard continues his strong play on the glass for Samford, averaging a team-leading 9.4 rebounds while scoring 15.5 ppg. 

The Bulldogs are averaging 98.3 points per game but are allowing 94.6 from their opponents. Samford is hitting 46.6 of the field goals attempted, and 33.7% of their three-pointers (8.8 per game). The team averages 68.4% of their attempts at the charity stripe. The Bulldogs have 3 players scoring an average of double figures, led by Myron Gordon with 15.6 ppg, followed by Christian Guess hitting 15.5 ppg, and AJ Staton-McCray hits 10.4 ppg.

After four postponed games, the Cats take to the road and travel down to Macon, Georgia to face the Mercer Bears. The Bears and Cats are the only two teams remaining without a conference win.

SoCon Basketball Wednesday (1-13-21)

Three games are set for Wednesday evening and night in the SoCon, as the Cats have another postponement.  Most fans will probably watch Furman at the Citadel earlier in the day as the Paladins travel to face the undefeated Bulldogs who just knocked off the Mocs after 3 games were postponed due to COVID-19. Wofford at VMI also looks to be another barn burner, as no one can take any team for granted this season in the SoCon. Samford and ETSU will not play Wednesday due to COVID-19 concerns.

Two Men's Basketball Games Postponed



Saturday's SoCon men's basketball game with The Citadel and next  Wednesday's game versus Furman scheduled in the Ramsey Center, have been postponed due to positive COVID tests and quarantine requirements within WCU's program.
