The Road to Asheville (Feb. 1, 2016)

Only two games on tap for Monday night, as The Citadel travels to Chattanooga and Mercer travels to Samford for the rematch for both sets of teams.

The Citadel (10-12, 3-6 SoCon)   at   Chattanooga (18-3, 7-1 SoCon)   7 pm   SDN
In the second game between these two this year, the Citadel travels to Chattanooga to take on the @1 Mocs. In Charleston, the Mocs won by a final score of  84-78. Chattanooga is 8-0 in the Round House this season, and are sporting a five game win streak.  The Bulldogs are 3-7 on the road this season, and are 3-2 in their last five games, coming off a home win over VMI.  We see a 15 point win by the Mocs over the Bulldogs in Chattanooga.

Mercer (16-6, 6-3 SoCon)  at  Samford (11-11, 2-7 SoCon)   7 pm    SDN
In the other game, the Mercer Bears travel to Birmingham to play the other Bulldogs for the second time this season, having won in Macon by a final score of 69-50.  The Bears come into the game with a 6-3 conference record, on a two game win streak, but are only 3-6 in road games. The Bulldogs are 5-3 this season in the Hanna Center, but are only 2-7 in the conference and are on a 3 game skid. This will be a tight game, but look for a two point win by the Bears in Birmingham.

That's how we see them, what do you think?

Men’s Tie-Breaking Formula

In the event of a tie for a particular seed, the seed will be determined as follows:

If one team has defeated the other team a greater number of times, that team shall be awarded the higher seeded position;

If each team has won the same number of games against each other, the higher position will be awarded to the team that has the best won-loss record against the highest seeded team not involved in the tie (example, Team A is 1-0 against the highest seeded team not involved in the tie and Team B is 1-1, Team A receives the higher seed);

If each team has the same won-loss percentage against the highest seeded team not involved in the tie, then the won-loss percentage against the next highest seeded team not involved in the tie would be considered and so on down the line until the tie is broken;

If the won-loss percentages are the same against all teams, then the tie would be broken by comparing each team’s Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) as published by RPIRatings.com after the completion of the regular season;

In the event of a three-way tie, the won-loss percentage of the tied teams against each other is first considered;

If the teams are still tied, the teams’ won-loss percentage against the highest seeded team not involved in the tie would be considered and so forth until the tie is broken;

If there is still a tie, then the tie would be broken by comparing each team’s RPI as published by RPIRatings.com after the completion of the regular season;

For multiple ties larger than a three-way tie, the same procedure will be applied as used to break a three-way tie;

For all multiple ties, the tie is broken by first deciding the highest seeded team involved in the tie before deciding other seeded positions.

For ties to determine the No. 1 seed from each division, the head to head records of the tied teams are first considered;

If each team has the same record against each other, the head to head records of the next highest seeded team in the division are considered, and so forth until the tie is broken;

If there is still a tie, then the tie would be broken by comparing each team’s won-loss percentage against the highest seeded team in the opposite division, and so forth until the tie is broken;

If there is still a tie, then the tie would be broken by comparing each team’s RPI as published by RPIRatings.com after the completion of the regular season.

It's official - WCU/ETSU to play at Bristol

Western Carolina head coach Mark Speir grew up in NASCAR country, so he's looking forward to renewing the rivalry with ETSU in such a storied venue such as Bristol Motor Speedway.

"We are first of all very excited about the renewal of the Southern Conference football rivalry between Western Carolina and ETSU," said Speir. "We're looking forward to being the first SoCon team to welcome Buccaneer football back to the SoCon - and to be able to do so in such a storied American sports venue like Bristol Motor Speedway is an awesome opportunity for both of our programs. Bristol is an iconic emblem in one of America's most popular sports, NASCAR. It's especially cool for me, a guy from Kannapolis, N.C., who grew up in the heart of NASCAR country and has been a fan all my life, to have our team compete on that stage in what will be transformed into college football's largest stadium. This is a great opportunity for our program and our fans."

The Road to Asheville (Jan 28, 2016)

This week, four games are scheduled for Thursday evening. Chattanooga and Samford are the two teams not scheduled  to play on Thursday evening.

UNCG (7-13, 3-4 SoCon)  at  The Citadel (9-11, 2-5 SoCon)    6 pm   ESPN3
The Spartans travel to the SC lowcountry to meet the Bulldogs in the McAlister Field House. UNCG is 0-10 in road games this season, while the Bulldogs are only 4-4 in protecting the home court. The Spartans are coming off a home win over Samford, while The Bulldogs are coming off a road loss to ETSU. The Spartans are not able to improve their road record, as the Bulldogs win by 7 points.

ETSU (13-7, 6-1 SoCon) at Wofford (8-12, 4-3 SoCon)     7 pm   SDN
The Bucs travel off the mountain and travel to Spartanburg to meed the Terriers in the BenJo Arena. ETSU is 4-6 in road games this season, while Wofford is 5-2 on their home court. The Bucs are coming off a two game winning streak and are tied with Chattanooga for first place, while the Terriers are on a two game slide.  While this game may very well be a toss-up, the Terriers protect the home court with a 3 point win.

Western Carolina (8-12, 3-4 SoCon)  at Furman (11-10, 5-3 SoCon)  7 pm   ESPN3
The Cats travel to Greenville to meet the Paladins in Timmons Arena on Thursday night. Western Carolina is 0-10 in road games this season, while Furman is 8-1 protecting the home floor in Timmons. The Cats are coming off a double overtime win over Mercer after losing three straight, while the Paladins are on a two game winning streak, beating Wofford and VMI. Unfortunately, the Cats road troubles continue, as the Paladins win by 8 points.

VMI (6-12, 1-9 Away) at  Mercer (14-6, 8-0 Home)   7 pm     ESPN3
The Keydets will travel to middle Georgia on Thursday to meet the Bears in Hawkins Arena. VMI is 1-9 in road games this season, while the Bears are undefeated at home with a 8-0 record. The Keydets are coming off a 13 point loss to Furman, while the Bears are coming off a 6 point loss to Western Carolina. While both teams are coming off losses, Mercer remains the only team perfect at home this season, and will pick up a 12 point win over the Keydets.

That's how we see them, who do you think will win?

For all multiple ties, the tie is broken by first deciding the highest seeded team involved in the tie before deciding other seeded positions.

For ties to determine the No. 1 seed from each division, the head to head records of the tied teams are first considered;

If each team has the same record against each other, the head to head records of the next highest seeded team in the division are considered, and so forth until the tie is broken;

If there is still a tie, then the tie would be broken by comparing each team’s won-loss percentage against the highest seeded team in the opposite division, and so forth until the tie is broken;

The Road to Asheville (Jan 25, 2016)

One one game is scheduled for Monday, as Furman travels to VMI.

Furman (10-10, 4-3 SoCon) at VMI (6-11, 1-5 SoCon)  7 pm  ESPN3
The Paladins travel to Lexington to meet the Keydets in Monday's only scheduled game. Furman is 1-8 in road games this season, with their lone road victory at App State early in the season. and the Keydets are 5-2 in Cameron Hall. Furman comes into the game off a home win over Wofford on Saturday, and the Keydets are coming off a surprising win over Samford. Against the odds, I'm picking the Keydets to pick up their second SoCon win, with a 3 point victory.

That's how we see them, who do you think will win?
