The Georgia Southern Eagles scored runs on a fielder's choice and two wild pitches to take the final conference series between Western Carolina and Georgia Southern on Senior Day in Statesboro.
Jeremy Null suffered the loss for for the Cats, allowing three runs on six hits and a pair of walks. Null tossed 6.1 innings and struck out three batters on 92 pitches.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sac bunt by GSU's Chase Griffin. Stryker Brown slid into home plate and jarred the ball lose to score that first run of the game. Brown also broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, scoring on a wild pitch from Null.
The Cats had a run thrown out at home plate in the sixth inning. J.D. Long tried to score from second base on a Bradley Strong single, but missed touching the plate and was tagged out.
Null tossed a second wild pitch in the seventh inning, which scored C.J. Brazil for what proved to be the game-winning run.
"We are very fortunate that we got good pitching in all three games. Ryan Frederick stepped up for us today and gave us a strong effort to start the ball game," Georgia Southern Head Coach Rodney Hennon said. "Jason Richman did a nice job finishing off the last half of the game."
"I am proud of our team. It was a hard fought series. Both teams were evenly matched all weekend long," Hennon said. "If you look at the scores, we had three one-run ball games."
The Cats will now need to take at least two games in the final conference series with Davidson next weekend, to wrap up the regular season title. With today's loss, the Cats dropped to second place, behind Davidson.
Too bad we couldn't send the Eagles out of the conference and into the Sun Belt like we sent Mountaineers.
