Baseball: ASU series
On May 2, the Appalachian State Mountaineers will visit Cullowhee for the very last scheduled regular season meetings between teams from ASU & WCU as members of the Southern Conference.
The weekend series will also be the final regular season meeting between the two teams on the baseball field as members of the same conference. The Catamounts leads the series, 77-46-1 overall, and have won five of the last eight games in the series, as the Cats won the series last season in Boone by a 2-1 margin, however, the Cats fell to the Mountaineers in the conference tournament last season.
Barring a matchup in the Southern Conference baseball or softball tournaments this month, this weekend's games will be the last time that Western Carolina and Appalachian State meet as conference rivals in any sport. Both schools have been members of the same conference for 76 of the last 81 years.
The Catamounts and Mountaineers were members of the North State/Carolinas Conference from 1933-1971, then again became conference mates when Western Carolina joined Appalachian in the SoCon in 1976.
The Mountaineers come to Cullowhee with a 15-26 overall record, and a 9-8 SoCon record which ties ASU with Elon for 4th place in the conference standing, 5 games behind conference leader Davidson. The Mountaineers have not traveled well this season, only winning five games on the road (5-16). ASU is 4-6 in their last 10 games and are currently on a 2 game losing streak.
