The Catamounts traveled to Charleston, SC to open the conference portion of the 2017-18 basketball season and picked up a hard-fought victory over the Citadel Bulldogs.
After pulling out to a 14 point lead early in the second half, the Cats held on to pull out an 81-79 win that was not settled until the final seconds of the game when the Bulldogs Zane Najdawi missed a game-tying layup with 1 second remaining on the clock.
Freshman Desmond Johnson led all scorers with 19 points, eight rebounds, and eight steals -- all three are career bests., off the bench for the Catamounts, while Tariq Simmons led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Mike Amius added 12 points, Ashley Williams 11 and Marc Gosselin scored nine points with 11 rebounds for the Cats.
The Bulldogs hit 13 of 44 three-point attempts (30%), while the Cats made only 4 threes off 20 attempts (20%).
