On Thursday, the Cats travel to Lexington, Virginia to meet the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute for the first time on the basketball court, since their return to the Southern Conference.
The Cats own a 28-21 record over the Keydets all time, and are sporting a two game win streak over VMI, having swept the last two games, the Keydets were in the SoCon, back in the 2003 season.
The Keydets are 8-13 overall this season, and own a 4-6 SoCon record, and are coming off a home victory over their biggest rival, The Citadel, 85-75. The Cats will be playing the Keydets in game two, of a five game home stand for VMI.
In the last couple weeks, the Keydets have have had some roster changes, QJ Peterson is currently on a medical furlough. Peterson ranked second in scoring in the SoCon at 19.6 points per game prior to his departure, forward Tyrell Mason, who played on last season’s team, has rejoined the program effective Jan. 20, and guard Conrad Jenne is no longer on the team’s roster.
The Keydets are averaging a conference high of 82 points per game, while holding opponents to a average of 80.9 points per game. Without their leading scorer in the lineup, the Keydets were able to utilize a balanced scoring attack last Saturday to beat The Citadel, with five players scoring in double figures. Julian Eleby led VMI’s five double figure scorers with 15 points, while Brian Brown (12), Trey Chapman (11), Tim Marshall (10) and Jordan Weethee (10) all hit double figures as well. A combined 60 personal fouls blown on VMI and the Citadel set a new facility record for fouls called in a single game.
