This week's Purple & Gold football picks (9-23-17)

It's week #4 in the SoCon, and time to pick Saturday's games.

All five games are set for Saturday, and we have some interesting out-of-conference match-ups, as well as, three conference games.

Furman (0-3) at Colgate (1-2)   1:00 noon
The Paladins travel to Colgate looking to pick up that difficult first victory of the season. Furman wins by 4 points,  28-24

Gardner-Webb (0-3) at Wofford (2-9)  1:30 pm EDT - watch on ESPN3
The Runnin' Bulldogs are looking for their first win, while the home standing Terriers are looking to remain undefeated. The Terriers are just too tough at home, winning  28-17

Chattanooga  (0-2) at VMI  (1-1)   1:30 pm EDT - watch on ESPN3
The winless Mocs travel to Lexington to meet the winless Keydets in the likely battle for last place in the conference. While both teams have had their problems this season, the train wreck that is the VMU defense just does not get the job done this week as well. Mocs win 28-17.

Mercer (1-2) at ETSU (1-2)  3:30 pm EDT - watch on ESPN3
The Bears travel to Johnson City to open their conference schedule with the Bucs who will surprise some with their game day challenge. However after all is done, the Bears pick up the win by a 28-17 score.

Samford (0-2) at Western Carolina (2-1)   3:30 pm EDT - watch on ESPN3
The Samford Bulldogs travel to Cullowhee to meet the Catamounts in the battle of the SoCon's two most explosive offenses. The game outcome depends on which team's defense can make the best adjustments at the half, after a couple of wild quarters. We think the Cats defense is up to the task, and hold on to give the Cats a 42-35 win.

Record this season:
18-5 overall
