Game #3 - Gardner-Webb


After playing one of their most explosive offensive football games ever against the Davidson Wildcats, Western Carolina travels to Boiling Springs, NC to meet Big South Conference member Gardner-Webb for their third game of the young season. The Runnin' Bulldogs come into the game with an 0-2 record, while the Cats are now 1-1 overall.

The Series: The series stretches back to 1932, and is currently tied at 4-3, with last season's win in Cullowhee. The last meeting between the two teams was 2016 saw the Cats win 44-24 in Cullowhee. Western brings in a two game winning streak against the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Gardner-Webb was picked 3d in preseason voting in the Big South behind defending champion Charleston Southern and Kennesaw State. Gardner-Webb is coming off a 5-6 campaign that saw the Runnin' Bulldogs finish tied for third with a 3-2 league mark in 2016. Quarterback Tyrell Maxwell was named preseason Offensive Player of the Year in the Big South. As a junior, Maxwell lead the BS in rushing yards (965) and total offensive (238.4 yards per game). Currently, Maxwell is the leading rusher, with 32 attempts and 118 yards gained

-Wyoming (Laramie, Wyo.) Josh Allen passed for 328 yards and two scores to lead Wyoming to a 27-0 win over Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon.
