Saturday's SoCon Football Round-up (9-10-17)



Week #2 is now in the books, here's how the games played out.......

West Alabama at Samford
Football Wins Shootout With West Alabama, 49-41.  
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team built a 35-7 halftime lead and held on late to defeat the West Alabama Tigers, 49-41 Thursday night at Seibert Stadium. In the win for Samford (2-0), Devlin Hodges completed 30-of-47 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns. Kelvin McKnight caught 13 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Roland Adams led the running game with 53 yards on 12 carries, while Hodges had 51 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Chattanooga at LSU
Mocs Fall at SEC Foe LSU Saturday Night 
BATON ROUGE---The 13th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs dropped a 45-10 decision at No. 12 LSU. UTC falls to 0-2, while their hosts improve to 2-0. Despite the result, there were some positives to take from the contest. Darrell Bridges tallied 88 yards rushing on 15 carries and a touchdown. Joseph Parker added 104 yards receiving on a game-high six catches while amassing 213 all-purpose yards.

Elon at Furman
Elon Thrwarts Furman Comeback, 34-31
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Elon's Owen Johnson connected on a 36-yard field goal with five seconds remaining to lift the Phoenix to a 34-31 victory over Furman Saturday afternoon at Paladin Stadium. The Paladins (0-2) erased a 21-0 first-quarter deficit and held a 31-24 lead late in the fourth quarter before Tre Lennon hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Davis Cheek with 3:00 to play. After stopping the Paladins on their next possession, Elon (1-1) marched 46 yards on seven plays for Johnson's game-winning kick. Cheek completed 26-of-35 pass attempts for 301 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair of scoring tosses to Lennon, who had nine catches for 83 yards in the contest.

Wofford at Mercer
Football Rallies For 28-27 Win At Mercer
Down 13 points with nine minutes left in the game, the Wofford College football team rallied for a 28-27 win at Mercer on Saturday afternoon at Five Star Stadium. The Terriers scored touchdowns at the 6:18 and 3:34 marks of the fourth quarter and intercepted Mercer twice in the final two minutes for the win. Wofford opens the season 2-0 overall and in the Southern Conference, while the Bears are 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in league play. The Terriers were led by Lennox McAfee with 99 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries, while Blake Morgan and Andre Stoddard added rushing touchdowns.

ETSU at James Madison
No. 1 James Madison too much for Bucs, 52-10
HARRISONBURG, Va. (Sept. 9, 2017) – They are the defending Football Championship Subdivision national champions and currently ranked No. 1 in the country. On Saturday night, the James Madison Dukes certainly looked the part. Scoring on four of its first five possessions and relying on a defense that held ETSU to just 175 yards in total offense, James Madison rolled past the Buccaneers 52-10 in non-conference play at Bridgeforth Stadium.

Davidson at Western Carolina
Catamount Offense Explodes in Home-opening Win, 63-17
Cullowhee, N.C. - Senior Detrez Newsome broke his own single-game rushing record as Western Carolina shattered its school benchmark for total offense in a game, amassing 778 total yards including a school-record 483 team rushing yards in a 63-17, home-opening victory over the Davidson Wildcats Saturday evening at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field. WCU snapped a 48-year old record for total offense in a single-game, eclipsing the previous standard of 711 set against Emory & Henry back in 1969, while the total of 483 yards on the ground broke the previous record of 464 set back in 1993 against Newberry.

The Citadel at Presbyterian
No. 13 Bulldogs Roll Past Presbyterian, 48-7
CLINTON, S.C. – Dominique Allen had three rushing touchdowns and fellow-quarterback Jordan Black had three passing touchdowns – on three attempts - to lead The Citadel to a 48-7 win over Presbyterian on Saturday at Bailey Memorial Stadium. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Charleston, but was moved to Clinton midweek due to the threat of Hurricane Irma.
