Pope to skip senior season at WCU, signs with Pirates

Brett Pope will not play his senior season at Western Carolina, as he will sign with the Pittsburgh Pirates early next week

“They gave me the money I was asking for and offered to pay for my last year of school,” said Pope, noting he could finish his college studies at a later date. “It seemed like the best option: to go. This is something I’ve always wanted to do.” Pope was quoted as saying to the Statesville Record.

Pope will travel to Pittsburgh early next week for a physical and to sign his contract. He will then report to Granville, West Virginia, to begin playing West Virginia Black Bears. The Pirates’ short-season Class A affiliate is a member of the New-York Penn League.

Purple & Gold Congratulates Brett and wishes him much success.
