Sinclair Ruled Academically Ineligible

"James Sinclair is ineligible for the remainder of the year because of academics," announced head men's Larry Hunter in a brief statement.

"It is unfortunate and we share James' disappointment as a basketball family, but we will move forward together as a basketball team. There is serious accountability as a student-athlete both on the court and in the classroom. We take academics very seriously at Western Carolina University."

Eligibility of WCU student-athletes following the 2014 fall semester was certified late Friday afternoon, and Sinclair was ruled academically ineligible as per NCAA standards for the remainder of the 2014-15 season.

Sinclair was a preseason all conference selection for the Catamounts, and is the current Southern Conference Player of the Week, which was his second selection this season.. Sinclair scored 20 or more points nine (9) times this season and was a strong contender for Player of the Year.

P&G's WCU Player of the Game (UNCG)

The Purple & Gold "Player of the Game" for the UNCG game is junior guard Mike Brown, from Charlotte, NC

Mike was the game's leading scorer, putting up 27 points for a career high. Brown hit 8 of 12 (67%) from the floor, including 9 of 14 (64%) from the free throw line, and was 2 of 5 from three-point range. Brown pulled down 7 rebounds, 6 defensive and 1 offensive, he also had 3 assists and two blocked shots.

Purple & Gold congratulations to Mike Brown on his selection as this week's Southern Conference Player of the Week.

Western has won five-straight against UNCG and the Cats are 28-16 vs. the Spartans all time and have won 13 of the last 14 meetings between the two squads. .

UNCG has lost three-straight including a 71-64 setback at Furman on Thursday night and bring a 5-12 record into Ramsey on Saturday.

Basketball: at Chattanooga (Game #16)

On Thursday, the Catamounts, (7-8, 2-1 SoCon)  travel to Chattanooga (9-7,2-1) as the two teams currently tied for fourth place in the SoCon meet.  

The Cats have a dismal 22-60 overall record with Chattanooga, and a even more dismal record of games played against the Mocs in Chattanooga, 3-33.  The Cats last won in Chattanooga in January 2013. Currently the Cats are on a three game losing streak against Chattanooga, but are 2-3 in the last five games played between the two teams.

Picked second in the preseason SoCon poll, the Mocs are currently 9-7 overall and come into Thurday's game 3-1 in their last four games played, with wins over UAB, Lipscomb, and Furman, and a four point loss to Wofford, in Chattanooga on Monday night.

The Mocs are in forth place in the SoCon in  scoring offense at 72.0 points, behind VMI, ETSU and Western. The Mocs are also in fourth place in scoring defense, giving up 66.2 points per game. The Cats and Mocs are neck and nexk in field goal percentages, at 45.1% and 42..2% respectively.

Chattanooga has three players averaging double digit scoring, with Casey Jones leading the way with 13.4 points per game, followed by Greg Pryor at 11.8, and Ronrico White with 10.4 points. Just under the thrushold, is Justin Tuoyo with 9.7 ppg.

James Sinclair was the game's leading scorer, putting up 20 points. Sinclair hit 8 of 10 (80%) from the floor, including 2 of 2 from the free throw line, and was 2 of 3 from three-point range. Sinclair pulled down 7 rebounds, 6 defensive and 1 offensive, he also had 4 assists and one steal.

In addition to Slick's scoring he pulled down 3 rebounds, had 4 assists, and one steal.

Basketball: Furman (Game #15)

On Monday, the Catamounts (6-8, 1-1 SoCon) continue SoCon play as the Paladins (3-9, 1-1) visit Cullowhee as part of this season's first double header (women vs. Montreat College @ 5 pm).  This will be the third consecutive home game for the Cats, but only the fifth game played in Cullowhee this season.

The Cats are 87-33 in the Ramsey Center under Coach Hunter, and are 4-1 in Ramsey this season and currently in the midst of a three game winning streak. The Cats are 27-37 all time against the Paladins, but are 18-11 in games between the two in Cullowhee.

Furman comes to Cullowhee off a loss to Chattanooga (60-72) and are 1-5 in their last six games. The Paladins are averaging 65 points per game, with a 42.6% field goal average, including 32.5% from 3-point range (6.7 made per game) and 67.2% from the free throw line.  The Paladins are averaging 15 turnovers per game and are giving up 70,9 points per game.

Junior Stephen Croone leads Furman in scoring with an average of 18 points per game, followed by freshman Geoff Bean with 11 points.  Those two are closely followed by junior Kendrec Ferrara & freshman Daniel Flower with 9.8 & 8.9 points per game, respectively.

The Purple & Gold "Player of the Game" for the first Catamount basketball contest of 2015, is senior guard, James Sinclair, from Savannah, Georgia. The Catamounts evened their conference record at 1-1 in a 78-70 victory over The Citadel.

For the second game in a row, James Sinclair is the WCU player of the game.  He was the games leading scorer, putting up 22 points. Sinclair hit 7 of 14 (50%) from the floor, including 6 of 7 from the free throw line, and was 2 of 4 from three-point range.

On Saturday, the Citadel Bulldogs travel to Cullowhee to meet the Catamounts for the 67th time on the basketball court, with the Cats currently on a 6 game winning streak over the Bulldogs.

Western owns a 19-14 record all time in games played in Cullowhee over the Bulldogs, and The Citadel last won in Cullowhee on February, 24, 2011.

The Citadel brings in 5-7 overall record to Cullowhee, and like Western, the Bulldogs are currently 0-1 in the SoCon, having lost to Chattanooga in Charleston by a final score of 48-67 and are coming off win over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on Tuesday night, having come into that game on a three game losing streak.

Currently, the Bulldogs are scoring 62.4 points per game, hitting 44% from field goal range, including 38% from 3-point range (averaging 7 threes per game), while shooting 72 % from the free throw line.  Two Citadel players are scoring in double figures, with Ashton Moore averaging 17 points per game, and PJ Horgan putting up 13 ppg.

ETSU at Tennessee   -
UT's Donnie Tyndall scored 13 points, had 12 rebounds and seven assists to help the Volunteers rally for a 71-61 victory over ETSU,

Mars Hill at UNCG   -
UNCG's Tevon Saddler scored 19 points in the Spartan's 92-48 victory over Mars Hill on Wednesday as UNCG snapped a three-game losing streak.

Wofford at Duke   -
Duke's Jahlil Okafor scored 24 points and Justise Winslow added 16 to help No. 2 Duke beat Wofford 84-55 on Wednesday.
