Basketball: Western Carolina picked third by coaches & media
The Cats did receive 1 first place vote in the coaches poll, Elon finished with 7 first place votes and 86 points, while Davidson finished second, with 3 first place votes and 90 points. In the media poll, Elon had 14 first place votes, and Davidson received 12.
WCU returns all five starters from last season, along with a total of 12 letter-winners that finished 9-9 in the SoCon, for a third place finish in the North Division.
This season, with the departure of Charleston to the CAA, the league will not compete in the 2 division format, but all teams will compete in one division, made up of tall 11 teams. However, each team will play only 16 conference games this season, rather than the standard 18 as in the past. Each team will play four pre-selected SoCon teams only once this season, 2 at home and 2 on the road. All other teams will be played home and home.

Sumler Earns Preseason All-SoCon Honors
Last season, Sumler averaged 18.4 points per game, while shooting 43.8 percent from the floor, including 36.2 percent from the 3-point line and 83.3 percent from the free throw line.
In 2010-11, Trey was selected as the SoCon Freshman of the Year by both the coaches and media, as well as named a member of the All-Freshman Team. Last season he was selected to the first team All-Conference Team and All-Tournament Team.

WCU offers Zach Cottrell
Michael is one of the top basketball players to ever come out of Jackson County and the now-defunct Cullowhee High School. How many of those students know about Cullowhee High School?
Michael scored 2,503 points from 1984-87 for CHS, prior to his playing career at Western Carolina, and is now the athletic director and boys basketball coach at Hayesville High School, and is his son's basketball coach. Zach Cottrell is his son.
Zach is a sophomore at Hayesville (Class: 2016), and the 6’4", 185 pound shooting guard is the proud owner of a basketball scholarship offer from Western Carolina. It's his first offer in his young high school career, but many more offers are sure to come as his graduation approaches in two years.
Zach is one of the best shooters in North Carolina, has advanced ball handling and passing skills and is an Honors student, a combination that will put this young man in high demand as the recruiting battle for his services begins.

Catamount Softball named to All-Academic Team
The Catamounts were the only SoCon team to be so honored, as they are ranked 43rd overall with a team GPA of 3.341.
The Cats named All-America Scholar Athletes are Haley Pace with a 4.0 GPA sophomore Taylor Sigmon with a 3.964, senior Makenzi McAteer (3.703), junior Heather Chastain (3.656), Sarah Perrine (3.626), Amelia Griffin (3.515).

Carson had a standout performance in a losing effort against Chattanooga, finishing the game with nine tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
With his performance, Carson leads the Southern Conference with 65 tackles on the season.

Catamount Basketball - #41 Charlendez Brooks
Catamount Basketball tips off on November 8th in Cullowhee. The Cats will open play against Wittenberg in the Ramsey Center. Coach Hunter spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Wittenberg, and led them to the NCAA Division III National Championship.

Hunter releases 2013-14 schedule

"Our players have had the best offseason workouts and improved their basketball skills and bodies to a man of any team I have had at Western Carolina. They are an excited and hungry bunch of Catamounts," Hunter said.
"We will need to carry this `I will not be denied' attitude throughout the season because we again have a very challenging schedule."
"We are excited to have the two early home dates against Wittenberg and UNC Asheville to give our fans an early view of our team," added Hunter.
"We lost a lot of close games a year ago and hopefully with five seniors and most of the team returning this season we will find ways to turn many of those types of games into wins. We should be a very exciting team to watch compete and play," Hunter concluded.

Coach Speir on the SoCon Weekly Teleconference
"It was a deal where we got down early and started getting a rhythm, making it a 14-10 ball game. We get a good kickoff, right where we wanted it to be and (Fabian) Truss took it the distance. We then went four-and-out and they scored again just before halftime. In the second half, some of our young players - and even some of our older players especially on defense - started to press a little bit. We lost our composure there in the second half; guys just trying to make plays and ended up making it worse," said Speir.
"It was a very frustrating loss - but we talked to our team. As coaches and players, this is where our true character and integrity as a program and as individuals is going to show."
