A Look At Saturday's SoCon Football (11-11-23)

Saturday, November 11, 2023

  • VMI at #2 Furman - 1 pm (ESPN+)
  • ETSU at #17 WCU - 1 pm (ESPN+)
  • Wofford at The Citadel - 2:00 pm (ESPN+)
  • Samford at #23 Mercer- 4 pm (ESPN+)

Four conference games are on The Southern Conference schedule for Saturday, November 11th, Chattanooga has a bye this week.

VMI travels down south to Travelers Rest, SC to face the #2 nationally ranked Furman Paladins in a 1 pm game on Saturday. The Keydets are fresh off a road victory over the ETSU Bucs in Johnson City, VMI is looking to play the spoiler roll in Furman's perfect conference record. The Paladins, winner of 6 starlight, won narrowly last Saturday in Chattanooga, picking up a share of the SoCon title, and the Southern Conference auto bid to the NCAA playoffs.  A win over the Keydets gives the Paladins sole possession of the conference championship.  Furman remains unbeaten in the conference with a 28-24 win over the Keydets.

Saturday's second game also kicks off at 1pm in Cullowhee, NC in the Blue Ridge Boarder Battle between the Catamounts and Buccaneers. ETSU travels across the mountains to face the #17 nationally ranked Cats, coming off a seven point loss to VMI at home last Saturday. The Cats kept their playoff hopes alive last Saturday with a three point win in Spartanburg, but need to win out to ensure an at-large bid to the playoffs. The land pirates would like nothing better than play the role of spoiler, as well as take the trophy back to Johnson City.  The Cats have the home field advantage and come away with a 35-21victory and hold on to "The Rock".

In game three of the day, one of the two winless teams in the conference will no longer be winless, as the Wofford Terriers travel to the low country of South Carolina to face off with the home standing Bulldogs of The Citadel in Charleston, SC.  Both teams enter the game with identical 0-9 overall records, but the homefield advantage will be to much and the Bulldogs claim the win over the Terriers, in a 24-21 final score.

In the day's final game, the Samford Bulldogs travel to Macon, Ga to face the #23 nationally ranked Bears of Mercer University. Mercer, like WCU has playoff aspiration, and needs to win out as well to stay in the hunt for the at-large bid. Samford has won two coming into this game, and the bears are riding a three game win streak of their own. I believe this game is a virtual toss up, but with the home field advantage, I think the Bears pull out a 21-17 win.
