SoCon Basketball Update (1-6-17)

There was 4 games scheduled in conference play on Thursday night, only Western and UNCG did not play, but they will face each other on Saturday. Now, on to the scores.......


Wofford at Chattanooga
Mocs Claim 77-66 Win in SoCon Home Opener
The Chattanooga Mocs started slow, ran out to a big lead and withstood a late 3pt barrage in a 77-66 win over visiting Wofford Thursday night. Tre' McLean's 23-point effort led four in double figures for the Mocs. McLean scored eight points in a 12-0 run that flipped a 22-11 deficit into a 23-22 lead. UTC held the Terriers scoreless for nearly five minutes when Ryan Sawvell ended the drought with two free throws at 4:06 of the first half.

ETSU at The Citadel
Complete effort powers Bucs past The Citadel, 115-71
The Citadel Bulldogs may have entered Thursday night’s game leading the Southern Conference in scoring this season, but it was the ETSU men’s basketball team that put on a show. Scoring a season high 115 points and using a stifling defensive effort to hold The Citadel 29 points below its season scoring average, the Buccaneers took the bite out of the Bulldogs and cruised to a 115-71 win inside McAlister Field House. With the victory, the Bucs improved to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in SoCon play, while the Bulldogs dropped to 8-9, 1-3.

VMI at Mercer
Balanced Mercer defeats VMI 68-50
Demetre Rivers scored 11 points and Ria'n Holland 10 as Mercer dominated inside to defeat VMI 68-50 on Thursday night in Southern Conference play. Desmond Ringer chipped in nine points while Stephon Jelks and Ryan Johnson added eight each in the balanced attack by Mercer (7-9, 1-2), picking up its first Southern Conference win. Ten players scored for Mercer, which made 28 of 60 field-goal attempts for 47 percent and never trailed. The Bears outrebounded VMI 44-27, outscored the Keydets 34-24 on points in the paint and 15-8 on points off turnovers.

Furman at Samford
Second Half Surge Propels Furman Past Samford, 83-73
John Davis III scored eight points during a 14-0 second half run and senior Kris Acox paced the Paladins with 19 points and 12 rebounds as Furman downed Samford, 83-73, to remain unbeaten in Southern Conference play on Thursday night at the Pete Hanna Center. Trailing 62-57 with under 7:30 to play, Acox scored off of his own offensive rebound and Davis drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 62-62 on Furman's next possession. Matt Rafferty's offensive rebound and stick back put Furman in front and Acox finished with a two-handed jam on the next Paladin possession to up the margin to 66-62. On the Paladins next trip down the floor, Davis followed an offensive board and timeout by connecting on a three-pointer from 27 feet out as the shot clock expired to extend the Furman lead to 69-62 with under four minutes left. Davis hit a floater in the lane to up the lead to 71-62 with 2:45 remaining and Furman hit all 10 of its free throw attempts over the final minute to seal its third straight win over Samford.
