SoCon Basketball Update (1-3-17)

Monday's results..... 
Eight teams were in action, and the Spartans were the surprise of the night.

Samford at Western Carolina
Catamounts Second Half Surge Falls Short
The Western Carolina men’s basketball team found its offensive rhythm in the second half Monday night against the Bulldogs of Samford University but WCU was unable to hold its lead down the stretch. Samford led the entire first half and most of the second but a 16-2 run by the Catamounts midway through the second half gave WCU its first lead of the game. The Bulldogs would respond with 14-2 run of their own to claim the 70-65 victory late in the period.

Mercer at Furman
Paladins Rally Past Mercer For 11th Straight SoCon Home Victory, 71-69
Furman connected on 5-of-6 trips to the foul line in the final 25 seconds, including a pair of free throws from Geoff Beans with 12 seconds remaining, as the Paladins rallied past Mercer, 71-69, in Southern Conference men's basketball action on Monday night at Timmons Arena. The victory improved the Paladins to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in the SoCon, while giving head coach Niko Medved's squad their 11th consecutive league victory on their home floor. Mercer slipped to 6-9 overall and 0-2 in the SoCon with its third loss in the last four meetings against Furman.

Chattanooga at UNCG
Men's Basketball Stuns Defending Champion Chattanooga In Come From Behind Fashion
The UNCG men’s basketball team found itself trailing defending Southern Conference champion and preseason favorite Chattanooga by 12 points late in the first half before the Spartans turned up play on both ends of the court to rally for a thrilling 73-68 victory over the visiting Mocs Monday night at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Spartans out-scored Chattanooga 49-32 over the final 22:52 of the game, including a 26-6 run, to improve to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in SoCon play.

The Citadel at Wofford
Terriers Fall in Overtime to The Citadel
Despite Eric Garcia and Ryan Sawvell recording double-double performances, the Wofford men's basketball team fell 104-103 against The Citadel on Monday night in Benjamin Johnson Arena. The loss was the first for Wofford at home since Chattanooga defeated the Terriers 77-68 on Jan. 11, 2016. With the loss, Wofford falls to 6-9 on the season and 1-1 in Southern Conference play while The Citadel improves to 8-8 overall and 1-2 in conference action with the win.
