The Cats with Bats blew open the first game with Purdue, defeating the Boilermakers, 17-6, in the season opener for both teams Friday afternoon./
Western made 19 base hits including six for extra bases, as the Cats scored two-or-more runs in four innings to wrap up their 10th-straight home victory, and winning their season-opener for a seventh-consecutive year.
Sophomore Bryan Sammons got the start, and picked up the victory, Sammons gave up seven hits over five and a third innings, as Purdue scored five runs - only one of which was earned - with three strikeouts against two walks. Junior reliever Jonathan Waszak struck out five including four-straight in two and two thirds frames while junior Taylor Durand allowed two base hits with a strikeout in tossing the ninth inning.
WCU and Purdue will wrap-up the three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am in Cullowhee.
