The Catamounts control their own destiny for winning the eight and final seed in the 2011 SoCon baseball tournament. The Cats can take sole possession of that last tournament spot by sweeping The Citadel, the defending SoCon Tournament Champs, regardless of what else happens this weekend in the SoCon. The Cats also hold the tie breaker over Wofford as they took two of three from the Terriers earlier in the season.
Despite boasting the second-highest team batting average in the league, .302, just behind Charleston's .304 and the SoCon's top hitter, Ross Heffley, who is currently hitting a blistering .423 average, the Catamount have not enjoyed the success of last season. The major culprit all season has been inconsistant pitching, as the Catamounts rank dead last in the conference with a 6.03 ERA. Pitching has not lived up to pre-season expectaions.
“If we can put it together on the mound, which I feel like we're capable of doing, and continue to score runs the way we have been, I feel like we can be dangerous this weekend,” WCU coach Bobby Moranda said. “And we could be dangerous next week (at the SoCon tournament).”
