ELON, N.C. – Despite a career night from freshman Lucas Troutman, the Elon men’s basketball team couldn’t overcome an impressive defensive performance by Western Carolina as the Catamounts left Alumni Gym with a 74-58 victory in Southern Conference action on Wednesday night. Elon (10-13, 4-8) mustered only 29.8 percent shooting, its lowest percentage of the year, compared to a 48.3 percent showing by the Catamounts (10-13, 6-5).
The Catamounts capitalized off Elon turnovers and hammered the ball down low, using a 10-0 streak to take control, 55-38. Western held a 36-18 points in the paint advantage in the game.
Lead grew to as many as 18, 61-43, on a Williams jumper at the 8:47 mark. Troutman kept going to work on both ends of the floor and Elon managed a 12-3 run capped by a Long triple to get it to single digits, 64-55, with 5:25 to play. Unfortunately, Western’s defense held strong and Elon would get no closer
