Basketball: Today in the SoCon (12-15-14)

Monday, December 15, 2014 – Men's Basketball Games in the Southern Conference 

There is no games scheduled for any SoCon teams on Monday.

Yesterday's games -

Wofford at NC State -
The Terriers' Justin Gordon hit a contested layup with 1.9 seconds left, then State's Travor Lacey's 3-pointer was waved off as coming after the buzzer, giving the Terriers' a 55-54 upset win over the Wolfpack in Raleigh yesterday.

"They fully expect when we get on that bus and get to places like this to do the ... things we have to do and find a way to win," Mike Young said after the game. "In a tremendous environment, in a storied arena such as this, (the win) is very, very special."

Samford - at Wake Forest -
Wake Forest pulled away in the second half for an 86-68 victory over Samford on Sunday. The Bulldogs outshot the Deacons in the first half, making 15 of 26 from the field (58%) and 5 of 10 from 3-point range. But Wake Forest was better at the free throw line (making 12 of 18, compared to 6 of 8 for the Bulldogs).

Basketball: WCU at Vanderbilt (Game #10)

On Tuesday, the Cats travel to Nashville, Tennessee to play the Vanderbilt Commodores (6-2) who are coming off a home win over Purdue. The Commodores are 5-1 at home this season, after a 15-16 finish to the 2013-14 season. Head Coach Kevin Stallings is in his 16th season with the Commodores and 21st overall as a head coach.

Vanderbilt is starting a very young line-up with 3 true freshman, and two sophomores. The Commodores are averaging 72 points per game, hitting 50% from the field, that includes 40% from three-point range (averaging 7 per game) and 67% from the free throw line. Vanderbilt has three players averaging double digits, led by Damian Jones with 17 ppg, followed by Riley LaChance with 12 ppg and Luke Kornet with 11 ppg.

Only two games today, but it would be big for the SoCon to get a couple wins over these teams..

Yesterday's games -

Marist at VMI -
The Keydet's QJ Peterson scored 25 points, and pulled down five rebounds, leading  VMI to a 92-77 win over Marist. The Keydets attempted 55 three-pointers, hitting 19 and had 24 assists as a team.   


UNCG at ETSU -
 The Spartans opened Southern Conference play with a 80-79 road victory over East Tennessee State, extending the UNCG’s three game win streak while snapping the Bucs’ five game win streak. UNCG finished the game shooting 50&% (26-of-52) from the field and hit 19-of-26 (73%) from the charity stripe.

Furman at Gardner-Webb -
The Runnin' Bulldog's Jerome Hill completed a double-double, scoring 28 points with 19 rebounds in leading Gardner-Webb to a 74-68 win over Furman. Stephen Croone scored 19 points for the Paladins and Geoff Beans added 11.

UNCG's Tevon Saddler scored 24 points as the Spartans narrowly escaped with a win over crosstown foe Greensboro College 82-78 on Wednesday. The Div. III Greensboro Pride got within 80-78 after three free throws with 21 second left in the game, but Saddler sealed the game foe the Spartans with two baskets from the charity stripe.

Navy's Tillman Dunbar scored 26 points as Navy easily beat VMI 84-66 on Tuesday night. Navy finished with a 13-2 run in the final 4 minutes.

TCU improved to 9-0, as they matched the win total from all of last season with a 80-69 victory over Furman Tuesday night.

Chattanooga;s Eric Robertson scored a career-high 16 points in a 104-50 win over visiting Montreat College. Chattanooga topped season highs with 42 field goals made including 10 three-pointers. The trio of Robertson (4-6), White (4-4) and Pryor (2-2) combined to shoot 10-12 (83.3%) from beyond the arc.

Basketball: Today in the SoCon (12-7-14)

Sunday, December 7, 2014 – Men's Basketball Games in the Southern Conference 

No Southern Conference games are scheduled today, on the day that will live in infamy.

Recapping yesterday’s games - a good day for the SoCon with 3 OOC wins

Navy at The Citadel -
The Bulldogs Jake Wright scored 21 points, including 6 of 10 from 3-point land, to lead The Citadel to a 67-60 win over Navy. Navy held a 50-46 lead with 5:28 to play, but The Citadel went on a 13-4 run to seize control of the game, outscoring the Midshipmen 21-10 down the stretch.

UNCG at Presbyterian -
The Spartan's Kayel Locke scored 20 points and had a late put back basket as UNCG held on to pull out their second win of the season with a 55-53 victory over Presbyterian.

Florida National at Wofford -
Five Terriers scored in double figures, as Wofford rolled over Florida National, 88-57. Justin Gordon came up just one rebound shy of a double-double and had two assists, a block and a steal. He also slammed down a pair of dunks.

Samford at Furman -
The Pladian's Stephen Croone scored 33 points to lead Furman to a 74-64 victory over Samford on Saturday.  The loss drops the Bulldogs to 0-2 in conference play and was the opening conference game for Furman.

VMI at Mercer -
Mercer's Phillip Leonard and Ike Nwamu each scored 18 points as the Bears held on to knock off  VMI 90-81. Mercer made 29 of 57 from the field and hekd the Keydets to 26-of-70 shooting. Mercer dominated the boards 47 to 29 , resulting in a 42-16 scoring advantage in the paint.

VMI at Samford -
The Keydet's  QJ Peterson scored 28 points as VMI beat Samford 88-66 in the Southern Conference opener for both teams.VMI was 25 of 35 at the free-throw line and finished with eight blocks and 10 steals, as the Bulldogs ended up turning the ball over 20 times.

Edeka Supermarkets in Germany set up hidden cameras and gave their shoppers an early Christmas treat! As customers got to the cash register to pay for their food, the lights suddenly dimmed.

That’s when the cashiers delighted shoppers with a choreographed orchestra that beeped the holiday classic, “Jingle Bells.”

The Catamounts now travel to Minneapolis to meet the Minnesota Golden Gophers who are coming off an 84-69 victory over Wake Forest in Winston-Salem. Minnesota is a member of the Big 10 Conference (B1G) and is coached by Richard Pitino who is in his second season at Minnesota. Last season, Pitino led the Gophers to an NIT championship.

Last season, Minnesota was 25-13 overall, and the Golden Gophers are now off to a good start this season at 5-2 overall, and are 3-0 at home this season

Minnesota’s starting backcourt is a pair of senior guards, Andre Hollins and DeAndre Mathieu. They are the two leading returning scorers and were named the team’s captains prior to the season. The Gophers also have a veteran frontcourt, also anchored by seniors, Elliott Eliason and Maurice Walker. These two split time at the center position last season, with Eliason leading the team in rebounds and blocks. Junior Joey King starts at the forward spot, coming off a strong first season after transferring from Drake.

Wofford's Jaylen Allen came off the bench for 16 points to lead Wofford to a 66-45 over Presbyterian. Wofford was 25 of 63 from the field (40%), and hit 11 of 24 three-pointers (46%).

Western Carolina at East Tennessee State - 
ETSU's Jalen Riley scored 31 points as the Bucs defeated Western Carolina 96-89 in a shootout to win the Southern Conference opener 96-89. The Buccaneers launched 59 shots, making 27 including 15 of 30 from 3-point range.

Georgia at Chattanooga - 
Georgia's Kenny Gaines scored 25 points in their 86-55 win at Chattanooga on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs went on a 16-5 run to opened the second half. Junior Casey Jones led Chattanooga (3-5) with 19 points.

St. Andrews at Mercer -
Mercer's Ike Nwamu hit seven threes in scoring 27 points leading the Mercer men's basketball team to a 62-33 victory over St. Andrews. Mercer stays unbeaten at home.

Mid-Atlantic at VMI - 
VMI scored the most points in over six years en route to a 133-62 win over the Mid-Atlantic Christian Mustangs. The 71-point margin of victory was the third-highest in school history.

The Citadel at College of Charleston -
Charleston downed The Citadel, 59-55, in the 92nd edition of the crosstown rivalry. The win extends CofC’s edge to 53-39 in the all-time series, and both teams move to 3-4 overall on the season.

The Catamounts travel to Johnson City, Tennessee to welcome the Bucs of ETSU back into the Southern Conference.

ETSU will be looking for their fifth straight win in a game that will air on national television courtesy of the American Sports Network. The game renews a long-standing series between the Bucs and Cats, as ETSU leads the all-time series 46-23 and has won 15 straight. The last meeting was back on Feb. 14, 2005, a 92-83 win for the Bucs.

ETSU has three starters returning from a team that went 19-16 overall. The Bucs return Petey McClain 6-0 185 Jr. Guard, Rashawn Rembert 6-3 195 Sr. Guard, and A.J. Merriweather 6-2 185 So. Forward. The Bucs are averaging 83 ppg on 43% field goal shooting, as well as 41% from three-point range (11.4 per game).  Currently, the leading scorer is Jalen Riley with 19 ppg, followed by Rashawn Rembert with 16 points, and Lester Wilson with 15 points.

Tonight's games - 

7:00 pm – High Point at UNCG  (SoCon Digital Network) -
The 4-2 High Point Panthers travel to Greensboro Monday night to meet the UNCG Spartans in the Greensboro Spartans.  The Spartans lone win this season was against DII Chowan, while the Panthers have four wins, they are only 1-2 in games on the road.  If the Spartans are going to make some noise this season in out of conference games, it needs to start tonight.

7:00 pm – Furman at Liberty  (ESPN3) -
The 1-3 Furman Paladins travel to Liberty to meet the 2-4 Flames, how have won both their home games this season, but are currently on a four game losing streak.  Furman's lone win this season came over Appalachian State, and this will be the Paladins first toad game of the season.

7:30 pm – Western Carolina at Charleston Southern  (Big South Network) -
The 3-3 Catamounts travel to North Charleston to meed the 3-2 Charleston Southern Bucs. The Cats have won 3 of their last 4 game, all on the road, while the Bucs are 2-2 in their last four, and are 2-1 om the Buc Dome this season. This could be the best game of the night.

University of Alabama-Birmingham to close football program?

Multiple media sources are reporting that the University of Alabama-Birmingham is preparing to shut down its football program, possibly this week, as the athletic director is expected to be fired as well.

“I think it’s going to happen,” said Head Coach Bill Clark, “Unless something changes before the weekend ends, I think it’s over. I think the odds are very high it ends this week. To shut the doors? That’s sad.”

The announcement is expected to be no later than Thursday. UAB is undergoing a university-wide comprehensive strategic planning study that included an evaluation of the financial viability of football.

The last NCAA Division 1, FBS school that dropped football was Pacific back in 1995.

UAB started it's football program in 1991 as an NCAA Division III school. This speculation comes as the Blazers beat Southern Mississippi 45-24 last Saturday night, and become bowl-eligible for the first time since 2004.

Basketball: WCU at Charleston Southern (Game #7)

On December 1st, the Cats travel to North Charleston to play the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. This will be the 15th meeting between the two teams, and the Catamounts hold a 10-4 all time record with CSU, but are 2-3 in games played in North Charleston.  Western brings a 6 game winning streak with CSU into the contest.  The two teams last met in 2013 in Cullowhee, and the Cats won the contest, 92-84.

The Bucs return five seniors, to a team that finished the 2013-14 season with a 16-18 overall record and went 6-10 in the Big South. Seniors Cedrick Bowen, Paul Gombwer, Arlon Harper and Saah Nimley have combined to play in 357 of a possible 376 games, while totaling 228 starts  Nimley and Harper became the third pair of Big South teammates to reach the 1,000-point mark as juniors last season. The 2014-15 Bucs were selected to finish 5th in the 11 team Big South Conference, with Saah Nimley and Arlon Harper selected for the BSC Preseason All-Conference Teams.

Head coach Barclay Radebaugh, in his 10th season at CCU, and brings in his team with a 3-2 overall record this season with at least one impressive win.  The Bucs knocked off Ole Miss, 66-65 in overtime to open the season, and have wins against Erskine and Central Arkansas, dropping one games to Wright State and Florida State. The Bucs currently have four players averaging double figure scoring, Saah Nimley with 16.7 ppg, Will Saunders with 14.3 ppg, Atlon Harper with 13.7 ppg, and Cedrick Bowen with 10.3 ppg.

Cats pull out win over Chicago State

The Catamounts were victorious over Chicago State, 66-61 in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic regional tournament on Wednesday to up their tournament record to 2-1. WCU's Torrion Brummitt scored 14 points and Rhett Harrelson had 11 points with six assists to lead the Cats.

With a commanding lead of 48-25 and about 15 remaining in the game, the Cats went into a scoring slump and Chicago State answered with a 23-5 run and pulled within five points, 53-48, with  about 7 minutes left in the game. However, James Sinclair scored, then Mike Brown hit a three pointer and the Cats shot 8 of 14 from the charity line to to hold on.

Trayvon Palmer scored 13 points and Clarke Rosenberg had 10 for Chicago State, The Cougars were 22 of 61 for 36 percent from the field.

The Catamounts will next be in action Monday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to Charleston Southern.
