Dates: March 20-22, 2026
Location: Childress Field / Hennon Stadium | Cullowhee, N.C.
Game Times / (ESPN+): Friday 4 p.m. / Saturday 1 p.m. / Sunday 12 p.m.
This weekend marks the official start of league play for both programs in a conference expected to be wide-open and competitive once again. Samford was the preseason favorite to claim the SoCon title (four first-place votes in the coaches’ poll), while Western Carolina was picked fifth. Early non-conference results have flipped the script, giving the host Catamounts momentum as the favorite in this series.
Samford: Preseason Hype Meets Reality
The Bulldogs arrived with high expectations thanks to a deep returning core and standout sophomore right-hander Mason Blasche (2025: 10-0, 3.24 ERA; named SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year and second-team preseason All-American). Offensively, they return several 2025 All-SoCon performers, including catcher Cade Carr (first team), second baseman Jeffrey Ince (first team), third baseman Parker McDonald (first team), and outfielder Jake Souders (first team).
Current form: Samford sits at 8-11 with a team batting average of .267 and 23 home runs through 19 games. The offense has shown flashes but lacks consistency.
On the mound, Blasche has not replicated his freshman dominance early on (0-2 record with an ERA north of 6.50 in limited innings). The staff as a whole has been outhit by opponents (.299 opponent AVG), placing extra pressure on the lineup to produce.
Hitting leaders:
-Jake Souders: .420 (19 G, 29 H, 3 HR, 11 RBI)
-Jeffrey Ince: .380 (limited sample)
-Gus Gandy: .333 (2 HR)
-Cade Carr: .302 (3 HR, 16 RBI)
-Trey Higgins: .286 (3 HR)
Western Carolina : Hot Start in the Mountains
WCU has played well above its preseason projection, posting a 14-7 record and outscoring opponents significantly (135 runs scored). The Catamounts return 25 players from a 30-28 squad that earned the No. 5 seed in last year’s SoCon tournament and bring five preseason All-Conference honorees: SS Trent Turner, LHP Davis Wright, and DH Trey Spees (first team); relievers Owen Austin and Ryan White (second team).
Current form: The offense is clicking at a .273 team average with 24 home runs and an .815 OPS. They enter the weekend riding positive momentum from a strong non-conference stretch.
Hitting leaders:
-Hitting leaders: Jackson Lyda: .348 (20 G, 23 H, 2 HR, 14 RBI)
-Wyatt Stanley: .319 (21 G, 23 H, 4 HR, 18 RBI)
-Mason Holton: .300 (21 G, 24 H, 1 HR, 18 RBI)
-Noah Quarless: .290 (2 HR, 12 RBI; recent SoCon weekly honor)
-Walker Fox: .290 (4 HR, 16 RBI)
The pitching staff, anchored by preseason first-team lefty Davis Wright, has been serviceable but not dominant (Wright also navigating a higher early-season ERA in the low-to-mid 6.00s range). Depth in the bullpen (Austin and White) will be critical against Samford’s potent hitters.
Key Matchups & Storylines:
Pitching duel: Expect the weekend starters to feature the aces (Blasche for Samford, Wright likely for WCU). Both have underperformed relative to preseason billing, so bullpen management and early-run support could decide games.
Offensive firepower: WCU’s top-of-the-order (Lyda, Stanley, Holton) has generated more consistent production and run support than Samford’s group, despite the Bulldogs’ star power (Souders, Carr).
Home-field edge & venue: Childress Field / Hennon Stadium in the mountains has been friendly to the Catamounts this spring. Samford will need to adjust quickly to the environment.
SoCon implications: With the conference race projected to be a free-for-all (Samford, Mercer, and ETSU all in the mix preseason), every early league win carries extra weight.
Prediction:
Western Carolina’s hotter start, superior run production, and home advantage make them the slight favorite to take the series. Expect a competitive three games, with the Catamounts winning 2-1. Samford has the talent to steal a game behind timely hitting and a bounce-back outing from Blasche, but the Bulldogs must improve their consistency on the road to live up to their preseason billing.
The series opener Friday night sets the tone for both programs’ conference campaigns—don’t miss it on ESPN+ for games 1 & 3.
