A Look At Saturday's SoCon Football (10-14-23)

Saturday, October 14, 2023

  • #4 Furman at Samford  -1:00 pm (ESPN+)
  • VMI at The Citadel - 1:00 pm (ESPN+)
  • Wofford at ETSU - 3:30 pm (ESPN+)
  • #25 Chattanooga at Mercer- 4 pm (ESPN+)

Four conference games are on The Southern Conference schedule for Saturday, October14th, Western Carolina has a bye this week.

The number four ranked nationally Furman Paladins travel to Homewood, Alabama to face the home standing Samford Bulldogs. Furman is looking for revenge in their only conference loss to the Bulldogs in 2022, while Samford attempts to remain relevant in their chase for back-to-back SoCon titles. A loss to Furman will most likely end any possibilities in that respect, even for a shared title this season for the Bulldogs.  Furman enters the game undefeated in conference play at 2-0 while the Bulldogs will enter the game with a 2-2 conference record with losses to both WCU and Chattanooga.  This game is close to a toss-up and I'll give the edge to the home team, for the upset of #4 Furman, 31-29 over the Paladins.

In the second game of the day, the Military Classic of the South and the Ingles SoCon Game of the Week, kicks off in Charleston. SC in a game where the each team's seasonal records means little, as this is a real rivalry.  The Keydets have dropped the last two games in the series (2022 & 2021), after winning two straight in 2020 & 2019.  VMI enters the game with a 1-1  conference record, while the Bulldogs enter the game at 0-3 in the conference standings. Given the improved play of the Bulldogs in their last two games, and the fact that the game will be played on The Citadels home field,  gives an edge to the Bulldogs.  I'll call it a 21-17 win for the home standing Dogs.

In game three of the day, the Wofford Terriers travel to Johnson City, Tennessee to face the ETSU Buccaneers. Wofford comes into this game with three conference losses, and the Bucs have two conferences losses. The Bucs have played a brutal schedule up to this point, having played JSU, Austin Peay, Samford, and Mercer. While the Terriers have played an equally difficult schedule with games against Pitt, William & Mary, Chattanooga and Samford. In their last couple game, both teams have shown improvements, but the home field advantage with come into play in this one as well, as the Bucs pull out a  24-17 home win.

In the day's final game, the #25 Chattanooga Mocs travels to Macon, Georgia to play the Mercer Bears. The Mocs own a 3-1 conference record, while the Bears come into the game at 2-1 in conference play. In another game that is pretty much a toss-up, I don't believe the home field advantage will be enough for the Bears to pull this one out. The Moc take the road win, 31-28.

My pick record:
Sep 23:  4-1
Sep 30:  4-0
Oct   7:   4-0
