Saturday's SoCon Football Round-up (10-10-15)



Week number six of football is now complete, and here's how Saturday's games played out in the SoCon.

There was a full schedule of conference games this week in what was and exciting weekend of football. With all eight teams in conference match ups, the overall picture clears a little, with both Chattanooga and The Citadel picking up big wins from of  teams that had sought to challenge their standings.



Furman at Chattanooga
The sixth-ranked Mocs dominated both lines of scrimmage as they rolled to a 31-3 win over Furman at Finley Stadium today. The win is the fourth in a row for UTC as they moves to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the Southern Conference. The Paladans looked to challenge the Mocs for the conference lead, but were able to score in just one of three red zone opportunities.
Purple & Gold's pick was "(Mocs) winning 35-17."


Samford at VMI
The Bulldogs Michael Eubank completed 31 of 42 passes for 337 yards and three touchdowns to lead Samford to a 49-13 win over VMI. Emmanuel Obajimi had seven catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns as Samford  picked up its first Southern Conference win and joined a crowded field in second place in the standings.

Wofford at The Citadel
The battle to determine with triple option attack would own the rushing game was won by the Citadel as Dominique Allen's two first-quarter rushing touchdowns paved the way for a rout of Wofford 39-12. Allen ran for 72 yards on the day and was 7 for 10 passing for 125 yards and a touchdown. The Bulldogs out rushed the Terriers 271 yards to 118 for Wofford. The win kept the Bulldogs in a tie with the Mocs for first place in the SoCon.

Mercer at Western
The Cats managed to stay in the thick of the race for the SoCon championship as Detrez Newsome raced 22 yards to score on fourth down with less than a minute to play as Catamounts rallied to beat Mercer 24-21 on Saturday. The Bears attempted a 42-yard field goal as the final seconds ticked off the clock in an attempt to send the game into overtime, but Jagger Lieb's kick went wide left. The Cats find themselves  in a four-way tie for second with Samford, Furman, and next week's opponent, Wofford.
Purple & Gold's pick was "Cats win 42-24."
