This week's Purple & Gold football picks (10-1-16)

It's week five in the SoCon, and time to make this week's football picks. On the schedule, we have a full slate of SoCon games (4) as well as one out of conference contest.

Saturday, October 1, 2016

Chattanooga at East Tennessee State - 12:00 noon - watch on SoCon Digital Network
The Mocs travel to Johnson City to play the Bucs in the renewal of the rivalry between the two Tennessee schools. Unfortunately for the Bucs, they receive another dose of reality from the Mocs as a drop to 1-2 in SoCon games.  Mocs win by 35 points.

Mercer at VMI   -   3:00 pm   -   watch on ESPN3
The Bears travel to Lexington in hopes of repeating their 2014 victory over the Keydets and picking up their first conference win of the season. However, the Keydets are coming off back-to-back wins and are flying high in hopes of a winning season. Look for the Keydets to win by 3 points.

Wofford at Samford    -    3:00 pm    -   watch on ESPN3
The Terriers travel to Birmingham looking to remain undefeated in SoCon play. The potent offense of the home standing Bulldogs are too much for Wofford's defense.  We're looking for a 21 point win by the Bulldogs.

Kennesaw State at Furman    -   3:00 pm    -  watch on ESPN3
Kennesaw State travels to Greenville to meet the winless Paladins. We're looking for a hard fought game and ultimately the Paladins prevail picking up their first win of the season.  Paladins win by 3 points.

The Citadel at Western Carolina    -   3:30 pm   -   watch on ESP3
It's Cats and Dogs on Saturday in Cullowhee, as the Cats defend their home winning streak against the Bulldogs. After a hard fought back and forth battle, the Cats come out on top with a 14 point win.

Saturday's SoCon Football Round-up (9-24-16)

Week number four is now in the books. Only four games were scheduled, two conference and two non-conference.

East Tennessee State at Wofford
The Wofford College football team opened Southern Conference play with a 31-0 win over East Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers scored touchdowns on their first two drives of the game and the defense held the Bucs to only 76 yards of total offense and recorded nine tackles for loss in the contest for the win.  -  Football Shuts Out ETSU 31-0

Samford at Chattanooga
The 3rd-ranked Chattanooga Mocs utilized a balanced attack in a 41-21 win over Southern Conference rival Samford Saturday afternoon. Balanced is the operative term as both sides of the ball contributed to the victory. The offense recorded 521 yards, with 285 on the ground and 236 in the air. Derrick Craine was the big story, rushing for a career-high 222 yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns. It's the third-highest total in school history, with 194 coming in the second half.  -  No. 3 Chattanooga Rolls to 41-21 Win over Samford in SoCon Showdown

VMI at Bucknell
Daz Palmer ran for a 12-yard touchdown in the third overtime, and quarterback Al Cobb set VMI records for career passing yards and completions as the Keydets rallied for a 23-17 victory over Bucknell Saturday afternoon in Lewisburg, Pa. With the win, the Keydets won back-to-back games for the first time since 2005 and consecutive road contests for the first time since the 1981 and 1982 seasons to improve to 2-1 this year.  -   Keydets Prevail in Triple Overtime Thriller, 23-17

Furman at Coastal Carolina
Coastal Carolina special teams scored two touchdowns and set up a third tally in the first half to help the FBS transition Chanticleers grab a 27-0 lead en route to a 41-21 victory over Furman in football action Saturday evening at Brooks Stadium. The win was the sixth straight for Coastal Carolina (3-1) over Furman (0-4) in the final meeting between the two programs for the foreseeable future with the Chanticleers set to begin play in the Sun Belt Conference next year.  -  Coastal Carolina Races Past Furman, 41-21

This week's Purple & Gold football picks (9-24-16)

It's week four in the SoCon, and time to make this week's football picks.

On the schedule, we only have four games on tap, with 3 teams receiving a bye week. There are two conference games and two out of conference games.

In the first conference game, surprising ETSU visits Wofford. In the other game, the preseason favorite and defending co-champion Chattanooga will be tested by the Bulldogs of Samford.

Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016

East Tennessee State at Wofford    -   1:30 pm  - watch on ESPN3
The undefeated Bucs travel to Sparkle City to pay a visit to the Terriers in the first game on Saturday. While the impressive Bucs look to extend their winning streak to three games, the ground game of the Terriers roll up the yardage and pull out the win,  17-14.

Samford at Chattanooga   -   2:00 pm   -    watch on SoCon Digital Network
Two undefeated teams clash in Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon, and will probably answer questions about the strength of both teams. Will the high powered offensive squad from Birmingham be held in check by what has been described as the best defensive unit in the SoCon? This time, defense wins out by a final score of 28-17 in favor of the Mocs.

VMI at Bucknell    -   3:00 pm
The Keydets travel to Bucknell where they pick up their second win of the young season. It's Keydets 28, Bison 21

Furman at Coastal Carolina   -   6:00 pm
The Paladins travel to the low country of South Carolina to meet Coastal Carolina in Conway. Unfortunately for the Paladins, they break the SoCon winning streak in FCS out of conference games, in a 10-24 loss.

Saturday's SoCon Football Round-up (9-17-16)

Week number three is now in the books. This week had the first conference upset, but the remainder of the games turned out much as expected. The SoCon remains undefeated in FCS out of conference play.

Western Carolina at East Tennessee State
Thanks to an epic comeback, the Bucs overcame an 18-point, first-half deficit to score 24 unanswered points, taking the lead in the second half and defeating Western Carolina 34-31 Saturday afternoon in the Food City Bucs at Bristol game at Bristol Motor Speedway.
In the Bucs first Southern Conference game since 2003, an ETSU program-record crowd of 13,863 fans looked on as ETSU improved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play. Meanwhile, Western Carolina dropped to 1-2, 0-1. This marked the second straight time the Bucs took down a team who was receiving votes in the STATS FCS Top 25 poll.   -    Bucs race past Western Carolina at BMS, 34-31

Johnson C. Smith at Wofford
The Wofford College football team defeated Johnson C. Smith 59-0 on Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers started slow and had a 17-0 lead at the half before scoring 42 points in the second half, which included three defensive touchdowns. Wofford moves to 2-1 on the season, while Johnson C. Smith is 0-3.     -    Football Wins 59-0 Over Johnson C. Smith

Tennessee Tech at Mercer
John Russ and Sam Walker scored twice, Cole Fisher hit a school record 49-yard field goal and Mercer scored 24 of the final 31 points in the game as the Bears rallied for a 34-27 win over Tennessee Tech in front of 9,772 fans at Five Star Stadium Saturday.
Mercer (1-2) could have had the final four scores in the game overall but a controversial call on a ruled fumble by Walker led to a touchdown on a fumble recovery for Tennessee Tech (1-2). The call ignited Mercer, which blocked the extra point attempt, and pushed the Bears to prevent the Golden Eagles from reaching the end zone in the final quarter.   -    Mercer Rallies for 34-27 Win over Tennessee Tech

The Citadel at Gardner-Webb
The 15th-ranked Citadel football team improved to 3-0 for the ninth time in program history and second time since 1992 on Saturday evening after clinching a 31-24 win over Gardner-Webb. Head coach Brent Thompson is the second head coach at The Citadel to start his career 3-0 joining Ralph Foster who won his first four games in 1906-07.   -    Bulldogs 3-0 for Ninth Time in Program History

Chattanooga at Furman
The fourth-ranked Chattanooga Mocs improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 1991 season with tonight's 21-14 win at Furman. UTC took a 7-0 lead into halftime and score 14 more in the third quarter to go up 21-0 entering the final frame. The Paladins made it interesting with 14 fourth-quarter points, but the Mocs recovered an on-side kick attempt with a minute left to ice the win.    -    Mocs Hold Off Furman for a 21-14 Win

Bristol Motor Speedway unveils trophy for WCU vs. ETSU game

In preparation for this weekend’s SoCon opener, a press conference was held at Bristol Motor Speedway on Wednesday as Executive Vice President and General Manager at Bristol Motor Speedway Jerry Caldwell, Food City president and CEO Steve Smith, ETSU football head coach Carl Torbush, ETSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Richard Sander and Western Carolina Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations Daniel Hooker met the media to talk about this historic event.

During the press conference, it was announced the winning team will receive two commemorative trophies – the first being a replica version of the Food City 300 trophy which features a football at the peak, the Food City “Bucs at Bristol” logo in the center and both teams’ logos at the base. The second trophy has a unique touch to the Speedway as it’s a tire used from the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race back in August. The tire is painted half blue and half purple with the Bucs at Bristol and SoCon logos lacquered on it. To go along with the trophies, logos were being painted on the turf on Wednesday as the “E” will be displayed at the 50-yard line.
