Western Carolina football tallied two-thirds of the Southern Conference’s weekly awards announced on Monday by the league office as sophomore tailback Detrez Newsome was named the Offensive Player of the Week while freshman placekicker Logan Howard picked up the Special Teams honor.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Western Carolina K Logan Howard - Howard was perfect on the night, kicking three extra points and two field goals - one from 45 yards and the other from 46 yards - as the Catamounts beat Presbyterian College, 33-21, in rainy conditions at EJ Whitmire Stadium.
X-Factor of the Week: Western Carolina RB Detrez Newsome - Newsome rushed for a career-high 189 yards and two touchdowns as Western Carolina trudged past Presbyterian, 33-21, in a rain-soaked Cullowhee, NC. Newsome finished the game with over 200 all-purpose yards for a second straight game, including 48 yards on three kickoff returns. Saturday was also his sixth career two-touchdown game.
