Thursday's SoCon Football Round-up (9-3-15)

The Southern Conference kicked off the new football season on Thursday with two out of conference games.  VMI traveled to Ball State, while Central Arkansas made the trip to Samford.  There was a third game of interest, while playing as an independent this season, East Tennessee State hosted another new program, Kennesaw State.

Central Arkansas at Samford  -  The Bulldogs came away from Thrusday night's opener with an impressive 45-16 win over the Bears.  While UCA dominate the time of possession. thirty-six minutes, to twenty-three minutes, penalties (12 for 183 yards) and turnovers (two) hurt the Bears. The hero for  Samford was Michael Eubanks who threw for a career high 372 yards and four touchdowns. This win helps both Samford and the SoCon.
Purple & Gold's pick was:  "The Bulldogs protect the home turf, in a close 21-17 battle."

VMI at Ball State - The Keydets of VMI put on an impressive performance against the Cardnals of Ball State on Thursday, losing by only 12 points to the Mid-America Conference team. Last season's SoCon Freshman of the Year, Al Cobb was 33 of 47 for 399 yards and three touchdowns for VMI while Brice Tucker ran for 87 yards and a score.  I'm thinking VMI will surprise a few teams this season in the SoCon.  Mercer is put on notice, this is not the team they beat last season.
Purple & Gold's pick was:  ".....new head coach Scott Wachenheim won't get his first win this week, as the Cardinals roll, 35-10"

Bonus -----
Kennesaw State at East Tennessee State - Once again, the feared triple option has it's way against a team totally unprepared to defend against it.  The Owls racked up 416 yards rushing and passed for 96 more yard for a total of 512 yards in the game.
Purple & Gold's pick was:  "I'll give the Owls an edge over the Bucs, and a win 24-17."

This week's record: 3-0 (overall 3-0)
