Welcome back to the SoCon Football Round-up for October 4th.
Saturday's games offered a few surprises, and gave us a new leader in the conference race as Chattanooga is now all alone in first place with a 2-0 record, but it is still early in conference play.
Western Carolina provided the first surprise as the Cats opened the day with an early game in Clinton, SC against the Presbyterian Blue Hose. The Catamounts never seemed to have their heads in the game, with a total of five (5) turnovers - two of of which were interceptions that were returned for touchdowns by the Blue Hose. The first interception came two plays into the Cats's first possession when PC's Ed Britt picked off the a Troy Mitchell pass and returned it 25 yards for the score. The late in the game, with the score 14-13 in favor of the Cats, the second pick for a score was a Blue Hose interception by Deonte Davis' for a 32-yard pick & score of Garrett Brown throw away pass. That pick with 1:46 left to play gave Presbyterian the lead and the win. Purple & Gold's pick was Catamounts win 35-10 - the final score was PC 10 - WCU 14.
The second surprise of the day, at least for P&G, was Mercer's play against Samford. The Bulldogs had what they felt was a comfortable 21-10 lead over the upstart Bears, when freshman Chandler Curtis returned a punt 99 yards for Mercer, John Russ ran in the two-point conversion with 54 seconds left in the game, but Samford's Jeremiaha Gates recovered the onside kick, preserving the victory for the Bulldogs. Purple & Gold's pick was Bulldogs wins 49-14 - the final score was Mercer 18 - Samford 21.
In the battle of triple option teams, Wofford preserved their 15 game win streak over the Citadel Bulldogs with a fourth-and-goal stop from the three yard line on the final play of the game. Wofford linebacker Kevin Thomas stopped the Bulldog's quarterback Aaron Miller just short of the goal line to secure the win for Wofford. In the final drive of the game, the Bulldogs received the ball on their own 35 with 2:45 to play. The Citadel then proceeded on a 16 play, 64 yard drive resulting in a first and goal from the 3. With 13 seconds remaining on the clock, the Dogs then threw three incomplete passes before the quarterback draw that was stopped just short of the goal line. Purple & Gold's pick was Bulldogs wins 21-17 - the final score was the Citadel 13 - Wofford 17
As expected, the Mocs had a big day against VMI. Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman threw four touchdown passes and rushed for two more as Chattanooga rolled over the out-manned Keydets. VMI was held to 165 total yards and committed three turnovers in the loss. Purple & Gold's pick was Mocs win 42-10 - the final score was Chattanooga 55 - VMI 7
In the day's final surprise, Furman scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 28 points against the nationally ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, before losing in double overtime. After trading field goals in the 1st overtime period, Coastal's De'Angelo Henderson hauled in a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alex Ross in the second overtime period that secured the win for the Chanticleers. Purple & Gold's pick was Chanticleers win 21-17 - the final score was Coastal Carolina 37 -
