True freshman Detrez Newsome is Purple & Gold's selection as this week's WCU Player of the Game. Newsome was also selected as SoCon Recruiting's Offensive Player of the Week.
With senior tailback Shaun Warren nursing a foot injury for most of the game, the Catamounts displayed a new weapon out of the backfield as Newsome rushed for two touchdowns and accounted for a game-high 207 yards in Western's first victory of the season.
Newsome rushed for a career-best 88 yards, adding seven (7) catches for 99 yards in kickoff returns. Newsome also had two (2) receptions for a total of 20 yards out of the backfield.
The Raeford, NC native scored his first career touch down in the second quarter, rushing for 37 yards of the drives total 50 yards, giving the Catamounts a 21-7 advantage in the second quarter.
