This season's Bulldog roster has eight newcomers, made up of six true freshmen, three sophomores and five juniors. Samford’s two seniors on the team are walk-ons - Hamilton Bailey and Tony Thompson. However, even with the youth on the team, in preseason voting the Bulldogs were picked to finish fourth in the conference by both the league's head coaches and media, with Samford's Raijon Kelly and Tim Williams both picked up for the preseason all conference team.
Second year head coach Bennie Seltzer brings in a 7-12 overall record to Cullowhee, and is just 1-3 this season in Southern Conference games. The Bulldogs are 1-10 overall on road games. However, the Bulldogs are coming off a 57-55 home victory over Furman (6-10), that was also had a 3 game SoCon losing streak entering their contest last Saturday. Samford has conference losses to Georgia Southern, Wofford and Chattanooga, before their win over Furman.
The Catamounts own an overall 9-3 record against the Bulldogs, splitting last season's games, with both teams winning at home in two very close games.
Samford has three players scoring in double figures, led by sophomore forward Tim Williams (6-8, 210 lbs) with 16.3 ppg, followed by freshman guard Isaiah Williams (6-1, 160 lbs) with 12.0 ppg and junior guard Raijon Kelly (6-4, 175) with 10 ppg. Tim Williams also leads the team in rebounds with 7.1 per game. Overall, the Bulldogs rank 9th in scoring offense and 10th in scoring defense.
