SoCon Basketball - Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018

Six games were scheduled for Saturday. Three conference games and three non-conference games were scheduled.  Winners in the conference games were Citadel, Furman, and Wofford. In out of conference games, the SoCon was 1-2, with Chattanooga picking up the lone non-conference win. Probably the best game of the night was a double overtime thriller between Furman and Western Carolina

Saturday's games -

Mercer - 69     Citadel  - 79
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Citadel's Zane Najdawi scored 18 points, with seven rebounds, to lead the Bulldogs over Mercer 79-69 on Saturday in a Southern Conference opener. Matt Frierson had 14 points and four steals and Connor Kern scored 13 points. Mercer led 33-25 at the break before The Citadel outscored the Bears 19-11 in the first eight minutes of the second half to tie it at 44. Alex Reed and Najdawi made jump shots, Reed threw down a dunk and The Citadel never trailed again.

Western Carolina  - 88   Furman  - 90   (double overtime)
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Jordan Lyons made a pair of 3-pointers in double overtime and finished with 29 points to lead all scorers as Furman pulled out a slime 90-88 victory over Western Carolina on Saturday in the Southern Conference opener for both schools. Lyons opened the second extra period with back-to-back 3s, but Western Carolina answered with a pair of layups from Carlos Dotson and another from Marc Gosselin, and the game was tied at 82. The Paladins then pulled away with a 7-0 run for an 89-82 lead with 33 seconds left. The Catamounts cut the deficit to 89-86 with nine seconds left but Alex Hunter's free throw stretched the lead back to four with eight seconds to play. Dotson scored 27 points to lead Western Carolina and Kameron Gibson added 17 points and Gosselin had 16. Gibson's 3 tied the game at 76-76 late in the first OT.

ETSU  - 62   Wofford  - 79
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Fletcher Magee scored a season-high 24 points to lead the Terriers to a 79-62 victory over East Tennessee State on Saturday night in a Southern Conference opener for both teams. Wofford. Magee was 7 of 16 from the floor and made five 3-pointers. Cameron Jackson added 12 points and Matt Pegram had 10 for the Terriers. Isaiah Tisdale scored 18 points, Patrick Good had 17 points and Bo Hodges 15 for East Tennessee State (6-3, 0-1), which had its five-game win streak snapped.

UNCG - 61   #10 Kentucky  - 78
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Reid Travis scored 22 points, and Johnson added six of his 13 points during a 14-2 second-half run that helped the Wildcats beat the Spartans 78-61 on Saturday for their seventh consecutive victory. This win revealed more about Kentucky's mettle than other wins it has scraped for this season. Facing a team coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance and unawed by the Wildcats' size or reputation, they took much of the game adjusting to UNCG's style and pace. The Spartans even seemed poised to take control, holding a 55-50 edge with 13:08 remaining, before Kentucky (7-1) had consecutive three-point plays by Travis and Ashton Hagans for a 56-55 lead. Kentucky shot 50 percent after halftime while holding the Spartans to 28 percent in the second half and 36 percent overall. Johnson also had 11 rebounds.

Tennessee Tech - 60    Chattanooga - 71
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Jerry Johnson led the Mocs with 14 points, Maurice Commander scored 13 and the pair combined for 7 of Chattanooga's season-high thirteen  3-pointers as Chattanooga defeated Tennessee Tech 71-60 on Saturday. Commander made 4 of 5 from distance, Johnson hit a trio of 3s, Kevin Easley scored 11 points and David Jean-Baptiste scored 11 with one 3-pointer. Chattanooga made 13 of 29 from behind the 3-point arc, 45 percent, and was 24-for-52 overall. Jr. Clay led Tennessee Tech with 15 points with seven rebounds and three steals. Garrett Golday added 10 points. The Golden Eagles stepped up their defense after trailing 40-23 at halftime, forcing 12 of Chattanooga's 18 turnovers in the final frame and racking up 7 steals, out of 11 on the game.

VMI - 45  Longwood - 65
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood's Lorenzo Phillips scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his first career double-double to led Longwood over VMI 65-45 on Saturday.  Phillips scored nine straight points and added a 3-pointer toward the end of a 17-0 Lancers run that made it 45-25 early in the second half. The Keydets answered with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 13 and got as close as 47-35 before Lancers pulled away for good. JaShaun Smith added 18 points and Damarion Geter grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lancers. Myles Lewis led VMI  with 11 points. The Keydets struggled shooting from the field (27%), the 3-point line (18%) and the foul line (42%).
