The newly crowned 2013 Southern Conference Regular Season Champs travel to Boone, NC for the final conference series of the season for both Western Carolina and Appalachian State.

The Mountaineers are currently 12-12 in SoCon play, placing them in fifth place going into this weekends game, 7 and one-half games out of first place.  ASU is 13-8 at home this season,  and are 6-4 in their last 10 games.  The Mountaineers are on a current 2 game win streak overall, but are on a one game losing streak at home.

App State's RPI is currently 96, and the Mountaineers are 6-7 against team with an RPI of 100 and below.

The Mountaineers have one mid-week game against #4 UNC-Chapel Hill, the Catamounts do not have a mid-week game.

Cats sweep Terriers, win Regular Season Championship

Today, the Catamounts swept the Wofford Terriers in a double header in Cullowhee,

At the end of the double header, the Catamounts became the 2013 Baseball Regular Season Champions.

The Bat Cats won game #1 by a final score of 3-0, shutting out the Terriers.  In game  #2, the Catamounts won the regular season title by winning the second game of the double header by a final score of 10-7.

Baseball: Saturday game postponed, double header Sunday

Due to inclement weather, Saturday's game with Wofford was postponed.

WCU and Wofford will play a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium.

WCU will honor the senior members of its baseball team in a special pregame ceremony prior to first pitch of game one of the twinbill.. Both games of Sunday's doubleheader will be broadcast on the Catamount Sports Network with live streaming audio (free) online at CatamountSports.com with streaming video (subscription) available through Catamount All-Access. Fans can also follow the game with live GameTracker.

The Catamounts defeated Wofford 6-1 Friday night at Hennon Stadium.

Cats starter Jeremy Null (7-2) went 8.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits with ten strikeouts. Preston Hatcher recorded the final two outs.

The series will continue with game #2 on Saturday at 6:30 pm, the last start time is due to WCU graduation ceremonies on Saturday.

Softball: Cats win on Day 1, upset #2 CofC

The No. 7 seeded Catamount softball team defeated No. 2 seeded Charleston, by a final score of 3-1 in the first round of the Southern Conference Softball Championships on Wednesday afternoon at the Greensboro Softball Field.

Western Carolina rode the arm of Catamount hurler Jordan Garrett and the bat of senior Amber Steinhardt to earn the victory over the Cougars.

Garrett improves to 13-12 on the season giving up one run on five hits and striking out five.

Finally, some movement in the SoCon

According to sources familiar with the Southern Conference's membership search, VMI, Mercer and ETSU were agreed on by the current voting members of the SoCon and will receive visits by the membership committee prior to the president's meeting at the end of May. 

Both VMI (1924-2003) and ETSU (1978-2005) are former members of the conference, while Mercer, a private school has no past association with the SoCon.

Will the SoCon's additions stop at three?

“As we looked at options, we decided to look at replacing the three schools we’re losing, and then see what the landscape looks like before we continue.” said SoCon commissioner John Iamarino.

So, the SoCon may not be through adding to it's membership.

If the visits go as expected, Iamarino said the conference could extend formal invitations by the end of June.

"The potential for that is there, yes," Iamarino said. "That's a possible outcome. ... When you decide to go visit a campus, that indicates there's some genuine interest on both parts."

In looking at the first group of possible new members, VMI already plays football at the scholarship FCS level, while ETSU is restarting its program at the FCS scholarship level and Mercer will play in the non scholarship Pioneer League this fall. However, Mercer's invitation is contingent on committing to becoming a scholarship program per the Macon Telegraph.

Is this a group of schools that WCU wants to be associated with?  Is the new SoCon, comprised of mostly small enrollment schools where the Catamounts, Mocs, and Bucs belong?  Maybe it's time for WCU to explore it's options as far as a new conference home is concerned.

Western Carolina is idle mid-week for final exams.

Starting on Friday, the Catamounts host the Wofford College Terriers for three games during "Senior Weekend"

Prior to Friday night's game,  WCU will recognize the senior members of both the men's and women's golf teams, then on Saturday, first pitch will be at 6:30 pm to accommodate WCU graduation ceremonies.

Prior to Sunday's game, the seven senior baseball players will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.

The Cats dropped 2 out of 3 games a season ago to the Terriers, which was the first time the Cats had ever lost a SoCon series to Wofford.   This season's Terriers come to Cullowhee with a 10-17 conference record (tied for 9th place) and a 20-30 overall record.

The Terriers are just 4-15 in road games this season, and are 5-5 overall in their last 10 games.

Cats Sweep Tennessee Tech

The Catamounts picked up win number 33 on Saturday, with a 6-1 win that sweep the two game series with Tennessee Tech.

Jordan Smith is the winning pitcher, going seven innings, while striking out 6.  Today's win upped Smith's overall all record to 4-3 on the season.

The Catamounts will now break for exams, returning to the baseball field next Friday for the final home series of the season, vs. Wofford.

Hairston and Bradshaw sweep T&F honors

The Southern Conference announced its April athletes of the month with Brandon Hairston honored as men's track athlete of the month and Alisha Bradshaw named women's field athlete of the month. 

Hairston won four events en route to being named Most Outstanding Track Performer at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

He won the 100-meter dash and the 200m and was part of winning 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Hairson was part of the 4x400m relay that turned in top league time of the season at the Penn Relays last week.

Bradshaw was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships in April.

Bradshaw won the shot put with a throw of 14.20 meters (46'7.25") and set a new meet record with a throw of 46.68m (153'2") to win the discus. She finished second in the hammer throw to help the Catamounts claim the team title.

Catamounts overwhelm TTU, 18-7

The Catamounts scored 18 runs off 17 hits in route to a 18-7 non-conference victory over the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech.   The Cats now have 32 wins on the season.

Jeremy Null collected his fifth win of the season, striking out 8 and walking none.  Overall, Catamount pitchers struck out 15, and walked only 5 for the game. The top bat for the Cats was outfielder Cody Jones, who drove in five runs off two hits, including a three-run home run.

The Cats have moved up in RPI to 59.

The Cats face the Golden Eagles in game two on Saturday, at 10:30 am due to possible rain.

Catamount Golf Tour Events

The 2013 slate runs from mid-April through late September with six different tournaments scheduled. The
2013 Catamount Golf Tour teed off on Friday, April 12th with the Catamount Shootout at the Marion Lake Club and runs through the Bob Waters Memorial held at the High Vista Country Club in Mills River, N.C. in September.

Both the Cats and Golden Eagles take a break from conference play this weekend as head coach Matt Bragga brings his first place Ohio Valley Conference Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles to Cullowhee for a two-game weekend series on Friday and Saturday against the Catamounts.

Tennessee Tech is coming off a 10-6 victory over East Tennessee State on Wendesday night, upping their record to 33-12 overall, however, TTU has two victories in that total against non-DI teams (Berea & Maryville).   The Golden Eagles are on a 6 game win streak coming into the Friday game and are 8-2 in their last 10 game.  The Golden Eagles have a 10-7 road record on the season.  TTU currently sports a 132 RPI.

Cats win 9-3 over Owls

The Catamounts picked up the win early on, scoring five runs in the top of the third inning, three coming off of Julian Ridings homerun and two more on an RBI double from Dykota Spiess.

With the win today, the Cats sweep the two game, home and home series with Kennesaw State, and improve their record to 31-17 on the season.

The Catamounts will travel to Kennesaw, Georgia on Wednesday to play the Kennesaw State Owls.  This game is the "away" portion of this season's home & home, mid-week non-conference series with Head Coach Mike Sansing's Kennesaw State baseball team.  The Cats won the first meeting in Cullowhee by a 2-0 score on April 23d.

The Catamounts will be playing at KSU in the first of only three games this week.  This week's games also include a non-conference, two game series with Tennessee Tech (Friday & Saturday) in Cullowhee, prior to next week's break for exams. There is no SoCon games scheduled until Friday, May 10th, when the Wofford Terriers travel to Hennon Stadium.

The Owls are currently in sixth place in the Atlantic Sun, with a 10-11 record, that puts them five and a half games out of first place. The Owls are 14-13 at home this season, but are in the midst of a 3 game, home losing streak.  KSU is 3-7 in their last ten games.

The Owls have a RPI of 151, and are 4-12 this season against teams with an PRI of 100 or less (WCU is at 68).

Western Carolina's senior closer Preston Hatcher became the Catamount's career leader in saves, earning his 13th of the year and 23rd of his career in game one in Saturday's double header against UNCG in Greensboro.

Cats sweep UNCG in Twinbill

The UNCG baseball team could not snap the Catamounts' SoCon winning streak Saturday, as the Cats swept the Spartans in a doubleheader by scores of 10-7 and 15-5 at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Western Carolina (30-17, 18-6) is the first team in the SoCon to reach 30 wins and has now captured 11-straight conference victories, that includes 3 consecutive series the Catamounts have swept.

In today's games, the Cats had a total of 25 runs off of  25 hits, and committed only 1 error.  Morgan McKinney won game one, and Jordan Smith won game two.

Cats win game one at UNCG

A grand slam by Tyler White in the fifth inning of a 1-1 tied game, sent the Catamounts to a 5-1 lead and helped the Cats on their way to a 7-3 victory at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.  The Cats have now won nine-straight SoCon games.

UNCG scored first in the bottom of the second as Eric Kalbfleisch led off with a triple to center field. A RBI ground-out by UNCG's TJ Spina made the score 1-0 after two complete innings, but the Cats responded in the fourth with a one-out home run by Jacob Hoyle.

The big blow by Western happened in the fifth with one out and Luke Gragg on second, a walk by Cody Jones and a single by Arron Attaway loaded the bases. After Julian Ridings struck out White came to the plate and drove a ball just over the glove of Eric Kalbfleisch and out of the park for the grand slam.

Jeremy Null pitched 7 and one third inning and was credited with the win, while Preson Hatcher pitched one and one third and is credited with the save.

A double header is on tap for Saturday.

On Friday, the Catamounts travel to Greensboro, NC to for a SoCon series with the UNCG Spartans.

First year head coach Link Jarrett's Spartans currently sit in 9th place in the conference, seven and one-half games out of first place, and a half game ahead of both Wofford and Davidson. The Spartans just completed a three game series with Davidson, losing the series, 1-2. The Spartans are 14-13 in games played in Greensboro, and 2-8 in their last 10 games.

UNCG is currently on a 3 game losing streak, with an RPI of 221. UNCG has a 3-23 record against teams with an RPI under 100.

Preston Hatcher named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week

WCU senior pitcher Preston Hatcher has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for April 24.

Last week, Catamount closer Preston Hatcher made four appearances as Western Carolina went 5-0, defeating Gardner-Webb and Kennesaw State in mid-week action and sweeping Georgia Southern to move atop the SoCon standings.

In his four appearances, Hatcher secured a victory and three saves, scattering three hits through five and a third innings pitched without allowing a run. Hatcher limited opposing hitters to a .167 batting average against, working around two walks with five strikeouts. A two-time SoCon Spring Academic All-Conference selection, Hatcher is on the ballot for baseball’s CoSIDA Academic All-America with All-District voting currently underway.

A preseason All-America selection, he was additionally named to the first mid-season National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year watch list.
