The Series: WCU leads the all-time series with UNCA, 49-26



Under the leadership of new head coach, Scott Friedholm, the Bulldogs enter the two game, home and home, weekend series with an 18 - 26 overall record, but are only 3-13 in the Big South. UNCA is 8-14 in games played at home and are 8 - 11 in road games.

The Bulldogs have already improved on last seasons' win record. They finished 2014 with an overall record of 13-40. Asheville looks to Hunter Bryant and Tommy Houmard to lead their attack at the plate. Houmard paces the Bulldogs just with a .353 average hitting out of the three position. Just behind Houmand, Bryant is batting .335 and a team high ten home runs. The first baseman also leads the Bulldogs with 37 RBI on the season.

On the mound, the Bulldogs usually go with Joe Zayatz on Friday night followed by Jordan Fulbright on Saturday.  Zayatz is 2-6 on the season with a 4.48 ERA, meanwhile, Fulbright is 4-1 with a 4.86 ERA.

The 2015 SoCon Track & Field Championships













Western Carolina  completed competition at the 2015 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships on Sunday, as the Catamount women's team won the women's overall title, and the men's team finished second in second place of the men's division.

The women won nine of the 15 events on the final day of competition to claim an 89 point victory over second place Samford.  The Bulldogs earned the men's championship by 41 points over Western as the men won five of the 15 events on Sunday.

This year, the Catamounts continued their dominance in Southern Conference Track & Field, winning 3 of  4 of the championships offered in Track & Field, while finishing second for the forth title, down only 41 overall points behind Samford, 203 - 244.

Cats rally in ninth for the win

Western Carolina hit a pair of solo home runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally for a 4-3 victory over the Bucs at Thomas Stadium. The Catamounts have hit a total of five home runs in the series so far, scoring all their runs in the first two games, via home runs.

In Saturday's game, Matt Smith and Danny Bermudez hit the solo home runs that propelled the Cats to a series-evening. The series rubber match is scheduled for 1:05 pm first pitch on Sunday.

2015 SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championship


The 2015 SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championship will be held this Saturday and Sunday (April 25-26) at the Samford Track Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.

In the most recent power rankings through April 19, the Catamounts lead both the men’s and women’s rankings with a sizeable advantage in both. Samford ranks second in both while ETSU is third on the women’s and Furman comes in third on the men’s side. If you recall, back in February, the Cats swept both the Men's and Women's Indoor Championships.

ETSU is in the midst of a seven-game losing skid after a pair of midweek setbacks to Tennessee and Winthrop. The Bucs are 4-12 on the road and 9-13 at home this season. While the Bucs have won only 9 home games this season, the Cats have only won two on the road, giving them a 2-11 road record.

The Bucs are hitting a team average of .289 while the Cats are hitting .293 as a team.

Baseball: App State mid-week series

The Series: WCU leads the series, 80-46-1, and has won eight of the last eleven games in the series


Last season's Catamounts swept the Mountaineers in Cullowhee for the final three game series as conference mates.

This year's Mountaineers come to Cullowhee for the first game of the home-and-home, mid-week series with an overall 11-28 record. ASU is currently sitting in last place in the Sun Belt Conference standings with a 4-16 record, and are 11 games out of first place.

App State is 3-7 in their last 10 games, and have lost three straight. The Mountaineer are 4-9 at home this season, and 4-14 on the road. They are hitting .263 as a team, and has three players hitting above 300 - Michael Pierson .355, Noah Holmes .323, & Dillon Dobson .311.

Mercer series

This weekend, the Catamounts travel to Macon, Georgia for the first ever series with Mercer as members of the Southern Conference, but it will be the third meeting overall between the programs, with the series tied at 1-1. Mercer won the inaugural game between the two teams, 13-10, in Cullowhee, then the Cats returned the favor in Macon with a final score of 8-7.

The Bears currently lead the SoCon, with a 7-2 record and are 20-14 overall. Mercer has a 10-10 record this season in games played in Macon.

The Bears are coming off a midweek, one run loss to Georgia Tech.  In conference play, they have two game series wins over both the Citadel & Furman, and a series sweep against ETSU.  The Bears also have 2 wins over Georgia, in their home and home series.

The Bears currently sit in last place in the conference in team batting, with a team .268 average and are in second place in team pitching with a 4.26 ERA.  Individually, Kyle Lewis is hitting .385 (4th in the SoCon) with 50 hits and 10 home runs., and Eric Nyquist leads the league in pitching with a 2.62 ERA in nine appearances this season,

Friday night's matchup features two of the top starting pitchers in the SoCon, as league ERA leader Eric Nyquist faces off against fellow right-hander B.J. Nobles and his 3.01 ERA (6th in SoCon).

On Tuesday, the Tennessee Volunteers will visit Cullowhee for a 6 pm start time at Hennon Stadium.

Tennessee comes with a 14-14 overall record, and are 8-9 on the road this year.  The Vols are coming off a weekend series with Ole Miss, which whey won on the road picking up wins in the last two games of the series.  Tennessee is 5-5 out of their last 10 games. while the Vols are 4-8 in the SEC this season.

The Cats and Vols will play meet for the 28th time all-time on the baseball diamond with the Cats holding a 7-20 all time record. Coach Bobby Moranda is 2-4 against the Vols.

The Series: Western Carolina leads the all-time series with Wofford, 64-17, including a 42-6 all-time mark in games played in Cullowhee

Like the Citadel, Wofford comes to Cullowhee for a third-straight season.

The Terriers won the series three seasons ago in Spartanburg, winning 2-0 in the opener and 6-5 in the back-end of a Saturday doubleheader to mark the first-time since Wofford joined the SoCon in 1998 that the Terriers had won a three-game series over the Catamounts.

Wofford enters the series coming off a two-game midweek series against #1 Vanderbilt,  The Terriers dropped both games, but were competitive against the Commodores, losing game one, 0-6 and game #2 by a final score of 3-5. Wofford record this season is 23-9 overall, 2-1 in SoCon play, but just 2-4 in away games. The Terriers have only played one SoCon series to date, that one was against VMI, with the Terriers winning 2 of 3 against the Keydets in Spartanburg.
