1 Day until Catamount Football Kickoff - Mateo Sudipo and Desmond Reid




It's now 1 day until the kickoff of Catamount football on Saturday, September 2nd, 2023, against the Arkansas Razorbacks in the War Memorial Stadium, Little Rock, AR.

To help pass those long summer days, and hopefully get the Catamount faithful a little more excited about the upcoming season, and knowledgeable of the team members, we'll continue the football countdown each day until kickoff day.

Today we highlight two players assigned to #1, one on defense and one on offense

Position: Safety

2022 (Redshirt Sophomore): Played in all 11 of the team’s games with nine starts in the defensive secondary … Finished fourth on the squad with 46 total tackles including 26 solo stops with three tackles for loss including a pair of sacks … Credited with six pass breakups and a quarterback hurry … Recorded two-or-more tackles in all 11 appearances with four-or-more stops seven times … Made his WCU debut in the season opener at Charleston Southern (Sept. 3), recording six tackles including two for losses with a sack for a six-yard loss … Recorded six stops in the home win over VMI (Oct. 1) with a sack … Credited with a career-high seven tackles against The Citadel (Oct. 22) … Posted three pass breakups and three tackles in the win over Wofford (Nov. 5) … Recorded four tackles in WCU’s annual Spring Game intrasquad scrimmage.

Prior to Western Carolina: Transferred to WCU from Coastal Carolina during the summer of 2022 ... Redshirted in 2019 as a true freshman, playing in two games on special teams but did not record statistics ... Played in 22 total games between 2019 and 2021, mostly on special teams and as a defensive substitution ... Recorded 27 total tackles with 21 solo stops and six assists with 0.5 TFL on a sack in 2021 ... Credited with two passes defended ... Made his first career start in 2021 at Arkansas State (Oct. 7) ... Recorded the game-winning tackle against No. 8 BYU in 2020, dropping Cougar WR Dax Milne at the one-yard line as time expired to help secure the program's first-ever FBS Top 10 win for the Chanticleers.

High School: Two-year letterwinner for Wake Forest High and head coach Reggie Lucas ... Was a North Carolina Shrine Bowl selection ... Started his senior season at cornerback and wide receiver before transitioning to quarterback midway through the year ... Helped lead his team to its third-straight state title and fifth title game appearance in 2018, going 14-0 with a No. 1 ranking in North Carolina ... Was a part of a 45-game team winning streak ... Named the state championship MVP with an interception on defense ... Also lettered in basketball, earning team MVP honors in 2019.

2023 (Sophomore): Selected second-team preseason All-Southern Conference by the league's head coaches.

2022 (Freshman): Played in 10 games as a true freshman with one start at running back … Paced the Catamounts on the ground this year with 826 yards on 119 carries over 10 games of WCU's 11 games, averaging 82.6 rushing yards per contest – fourth-best in the SoCon – and scored four touchdowns … Eclipsed the 100 rushing yard mark three times including a career-best 175 yards and two touchdowns in the home-opening win over Presbyterian (Sept. 17) … Also went over the 100-yard rushing mark with 129 yards against The Citadel (Oct. 22) and 112 yards in the home win over Wofford (Nov. 5), collecting honorable mention for the FedEx Ground FCS National Freshman of the Week award from Stats Perform … Added 21 receptions for 212 yards and a score in the upset win over nationally-ranked Chattanooga (Nov. 19) … Amassed a team-best 1,038 all-purpose yards – one of just five players in the league to finish the season with a seasonal average of over 100 all-purpose yards per game … All told, accumulated over 100 all-purpose yards six times on the season for the SoCon-leading Catamount offense … Selected as the consensus 2022 SoCon Freshman of the Year from both the league's head coaches and the voting members of the SoCon Sports Media Association (SCSMA) … Selected second-team All-Southern Conference by the league’s head coaches … Named to the HERO Sports Freshman All-America team and the 2022 Stats Perform FCS Freshman All-America squad … Finished sixth in the national voting for the Stats Perform FCS Jerry Rice Award.

Prior to Western Carolina: Three-year varsity letter winner … Rushed for 1,536 yards and 22 touchdowns a season ago in guiding his high school to the second round of Florida's 7-A playoffs … Caught 13 passes for 243 yards and three scores … Added a pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns … Listed as a three-star athlete by 247Sports and a two-star athlete by Rivals.com … Also runs track as a prep competing in both the 100 and 200-meter dash events.

Personal: Goes by the nickname, "Dez" ... Is the son of Tamesa Willis-Reid and Donovan Reid ... Is one of four children - Edward, CaRon, and Tyler.
