The SoCon went 4-4 in today's games, with Chattanooga, Furman, VMI, & UNCG picking up out-of-conference wins.
Chattanooga 82 - Gardner-Webb 71
The Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team used another dominating second-half effort on both sides of the floor to notch its third-straight victory after defeating Gardner-Webb 82-71 inside Paul Porter Arena on Saturday afternoon in Boiling Springs, N.C. Following the win, Chattanooga improves to 5-3 on the season and has successfully eliminated a halftime deficit in each of its last three wins. Gardner-Webb falls to 2-6 after the defeat in its home opener of the 2022-23 season. Trailing 39-38 at halftime, UTC out-scored GWU 44-32 in the second half and limited the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 27.3% (9-of-33) mark from the field including a 18.2% (2-of-11) tally from three during that span. "I'm just really proud of our guys. I have a ton of respect for Gardner-Webb and what they've done over the recent years, Coach [Tim] Craft does a fantastic job … we had a lot of guys contribute today," said head coach Dan Earl.
South Carolina State 76 - Furman 88
Sophomore Alex Williams scored all of his career-high 15 points during a 19-4 second-half run to lead Furman to an 88-76 victory over South Carolina State in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena. The victory marked the fourth straight for the Paladins, who improved to 6-2 on the season, and their 30th triumph in their last 31 regular season non-conference matchups inside Timmons. South Carolina State slipped to 1-8. Furman shot 56.1% on the day and made good on 16-of-19 trips to the foul line. The Paladins managed a 33-30 rebounding edge and overcame 20 turnovers that led to 19 Bulldog points. Jordan Simpson came off the bench to lead South Carolina State with 14 points. Raquan Brown and Gary added 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Bulldogs shot 47% and notched 12 steals but connected on just 4-of-16 three-point attempts.
Charleston 70 - The Citadel 57
The Citadel freshman guard Madison Durr scored a career-high 20 points to lead in the Bulldogs in a 79-57 setback to the College of Charleston Saturday afternoon in front of 4,630 fans inside McAlister Field House. The Bulldogs got off to a hot start as David Maynard and Stephen Clark hit from in close to give the Bulldogs the 4-0 advantage. The Cougars were able to respond with a 12-0 run to take the lead. The Citadel kept the game close for the majority of the first half as Madison Durr hit a layup and Clark made a free throw to pull within six. CofC pushed the halftime advantage to 14 points with a 10-2 run to close the half. The Bulldogs got the scoring going in the second half with a three-pointer from the corner by Maynard. AJ Smith pulled the Dogs within 12 five minutes into the half on a three-point play. The Cougars were able to eventually wear the Bulldogs down over the final 10 minutes of the game for the final margin of victory.
Navy 72 - VMI 80
Senior Sean Conway scored a career-high 28 points Saturday as the VMI men's basketball team upset The Naval Academy 80-72 from Cameron Hall in non-conference play. The victory is the first Division I win for first-year VMI head coach Andrew Wilson. Navy (5-3) finished 21-11 in 2021-22 and advanced to the Patriot League Tournament finals. VMI earned just its second win in the 25-game all-time series, the last coming in 2004. The Keydets shot a sizzling 56 percent from three-point range (14-25); including 6-7 from Conway and 4-5 from freshman Tyler Houser. After trailing 9-2 to open the game, VMI outscored Navy 41-15 over the next 14 minutes to take a 43-24 edge just before intermission. The Keydets opened a 20-point lead (52-32) with 17 minutes left in the game on a three pointer by Houser. Navy cut into the advantage and trailed by just six in the closing minutes, but VMI sealed the game from the free-throw line. VMI committed just seven turnovers on the afternoon, down from an average of 14.6 the first eight games of the season. Houser finished with 16 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Devin Butler scored 13 points, hitting 3-of-6 from downtown. Asher Woods netted 11 points; Rickey Bradley, Jr. had five points, five rebounds and five assists. Austin Inge led Navy with 21 points Tyler Nelson scored 15 points for the visitors and Daniel Deaver snared a game-high 12 rebounds.
UNCG 65 - Elon 61
Mikeal Brown-Jones scored a career-high 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting as the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team earned a Saturday afternoon victory over Elon, 65-61. The victory over the Phoenix marks the fourth consecutive victory over Elon, dating back to the 2017-18 season. Both sides traded the lead five times in the first five minutes of the first half with the Spartans holding a one-point lead, 7-6, five minutes into the contest. The layup at the 15:13 mark from Kobe Langley sparked a 13-0 run that lasted the next 4:07 as the Spartans exploded for a 12-point lead, 18-6. UNCG's lead briefly dipped to eight with 9:40 remaining in the first half, but the Spartans reclaimed a ten-point lead 20 seconds later thanks to a layup from Brown-Jones.
Jacksonville State 63 - ETSU 61
Despite leading by seven midway through the second half, the ETSU men’s basketball team couldn’t hold on as Jacksonville State hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 59 seconds remaining and the Buccaneers suffered a 63-61 setback to the Gamecocks on Saturday evening inside Freedom Hall. After pulling within one on a Justice Smith (Lyons, N.Y.) baseline jumper with 43 seconds to go, the Bucs forced a turnover on a steal by Smith, but he stepped out of bounds with 19 seconds showing on the clock, forcing the Blue and Gold to come up empty. ETSU was forced to foul and Jacksonville State’s Skyelar Potter made one of two free throws, giving the Blue and Gold another opportunity. Unfortunately, Jaden Seymour’s (Charlotte, N.C.) open three-point look from the left wing couldn’t fall and Jacksonville State walked away with the two-point non-conference victory.
Wofford 62 - Vanderbilt 65
On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College men's basketball team was unable to end the game on top in a back-and-fourth loss by a 65-62 margin to Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium. Down 34-25 at the half, Wofford used a 10-0 run to take the lead to start the second half. After the Terriers had a one-point lead four different times in the half, the Commodores had a one-point lead with just under a minute to go and were able to close out the contest from the free throw line. With the win the Terriers' record moves to 5-4 to start the season, while the Commodores even their record at 4-4.
South Carolina Upstate 79 - Western Carolina 64
Tyzhaun Claude recorded his team-leading fourth double-double of the season, but Western Carolina dropped a 79-64 decision to USC Upstate in non-conference basketball action Saturday on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center. USC Upstate evens its record at 4-4 while WCU drops to 4-5. Claude tallied 17 points to finish in double figures for the ninth straight game and snagged 12 rebounds. Tre Jackson finished with 15 points followed by Vonterius Woolbright with 11. Jordan Gainey led four USC Upstate players in double figures with 21 points. Nick Alves and Khydarius Smith both tallied 12 points, followed by Justin Bailey with 11.
