Week number six is now in the books. Let's take a look at Saturday's games.
Samford at Furman
Samford sophomore quarterback Devlin Hodges threw for a career-high 411 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a 38-21 Southern Conference win at Furman Saturday afternoon at Paladin Stadium. Hodges completed 27-of-38 passes in the game, becoming the first Samford player to throw for 400 yards or more since Andy Summerlin threw for 415 yards against Elon in 2013. He completed touchdown passes from 63, 16 and six yards out, all to Karel Hamilton. He also had one seven-yard touchdown run. - Samford Earns SoCon Road Win At Furman, 38-21
East Tennessee State at VMI
Al Cobb threw for three touchdowns and the VMI running game piled up 233 yards on the ground, propelling the Keydets past the ETSU Bucs, 37-7, in SoCon football action Saturday at Lexington's Foster Stadium. Alex Keys scored with 5:20 left in the first quarter, his fourth rushing touchdown in the past two games, and the Keydets (3-2, 1-1 SoCon) were on cruise control from there. ETSU (2-3, 1-3) managed just 123 yards of total offense in the first half as VMI pulled out to a 27-0 lead at the break, and the visitors did not seriously threaten until averting the shutout in the final minute. - Keydets Dominate ETSU in 37-7 Win
Mercer at Chattanooga
The No. 3 Chattanooga Mocs kept their perfect record intact with a 52-31 Homecoming win over Mercer Saturday afternoon. The Mocs amassed 531 yards in rising to 6-0 overall, 4-0 atop the Southern Conference standings. It's the first 6-0 start since 1968. Junior quarterback Alejandro Bennifield accounted for five touchdowns. His four touchdown passes went to four different receivers, and he added a 21-yard run in the third quarter. The Mocs took control early and never looked back. They scored on all six first half drives and seven of the first eight to build a 45-10 lead on Bennifield's jaunt. On the ensuing drive, Montrell Pardue collected a John Russ offering returning it 29 yards for his second career score and end the Mocs' scoring. - No. 3 Chattanooga Improves to 6-0 with Homecoming Win over Mercer
Wofford at Western Carolina
The Wofford College football team defeated Western Carolina 31-19 on Saturday night at E.J. Whitmire Stadium. The Catamounts made it a five point game in the fourth quarter, but the Terriers answered with a 14-play touchdown drive that used over eight minutes. A forced fumble and recovery by Datavious Wilson enabled the Terriers to run out the clock. Wofford moves to 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in the Southern Conference, while Western Carolina is 1-4 and 0-3 in the league. Wofford was led by Lorenzo Long with 135 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Cole Cleary added 70 yards and a touchdown. The Catamounts were led by Terryron Robinson with 99 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. - Football Wins 31-19 At Western Carolina
Thursday's game
The Citadel at North Greenville
The 9th-ranked Citadel football team downed North Greenville 38-14 on Thursday night to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 1992. With the win, head coach Brent Thompson has broken The Citadel's record for most wins to start a career. His 5-0 start betters the previous mark of 4-0 established by Ralph Foster, who won all three games in 1906 and the first game of 1907. - Bulldogs Rush for 559 Yards in 38-14 Win
