Only four games on Saturday, and it was not a good day for the SoCon teams. 1-3 on the day. The lone bright spot for the day turned out to be Mercer.
Alcorn State at Mercer
Mercer's Demetre Rivers scored 15 points to lead Mercer over Alcorn State 68-43 on Saturday. The Bears controlled the floor, hitting 22 of 45 field goal attempts while limiting Alcorn State to 28% shooting. The bears won the rebounding battle as well, 37-23, while picking up 26 points in the paint and holding Alcorn State to 16. Tamarcio Wilson and Marquis Vance had 10 points apiece to lead Alcorn State (0-7).
Charleston at The Citadel
In the cross town rivalry, the Cougars pulled away down the stretch to defeat The Citadel 82-74 on Saturday. Derrick Henry's layup with 2:37 to play put the Bulldogs up 74-73 but from there they had three turnovers and missed four 3-point attempts. Henry led The Citadel, which was averaging a national best 96.6 points a game, with 15 points.
Western Carolina at Illinois
Kendrick Nunn finished with a career-high 27 to help Illinois survive against the Catamounts, 80-68. Mike Brown led Western Carolina with 23 points. Elijah Pughsley finished with 15, all on 3-pointers. He was 5 of 10 from behind the arc. The game was sloppy. Western Carolina turned the ball over 19 times and the Illini 16.
VMI at Ohio State
The Buckeyes defeated VMI, 89-62 on Saturday. They led nearly the whole way against the Keydets using a 15-3 run to open up a 39-26 lead in the first half. QJ Peterson led the Keydets with 23 points while Tim Marshall and Julian Eleby added 12 and 11, respectively.
