Saturday's SoCon Football Round-up (11-1-14)


We now have a single leader atop the SoCon football standings after Chattanooga's runaway victory in Cullowhee. There was another couple of surprises as both VMI and The Citadel picked up their first conference victories of the season.

In other action, Samford held Concordia scoreless in non-conference action, while the Wofford Terriers rested up for next week's visit to conference leader Chattanooga.   Let look at this week's action.


Furman at VMI:  Virginia Military Institute snapped a six-game losing streak while at the same time picked up their first Southern Conference victory since returning to the fold, with a 31-15 victory over Furman on Saturday. VMI quarterback Al Cobb threw two touchdown passes and ran for one more he finished with 24 of 37 passes for 239 yards and led the Keydets with 49 yards rushing.

Chattanooga at Western Carolina: Chattanooga's Jacob Huesman, threw for 126 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another. Keon Williams ran for 194 yards and two touchdowns as the Chattanooga Mocs ran over a stunned Western Carolina, 51-0 on Saturday. The Catamounts only crossed midfield twice in the entire game as the Moc defense limited the Cats to just 102 total yards. The Mocs now have sole possession of first place in the SoCon, and the win gives them the inside track to the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA playoffs.

The Citadel at Mercer:  The Bulldogs ended their conference drought with a 28-26 victory over the Mercer Bears. Aaron Miller passed only twice during the game but ran for 83 yards and a score for the Bulldogs (3-6, 1/3 Southern). Isaiah Smith ran for 53 yards and two touchdowns as The Citadel amassed 493 yards rushing. The Bears held the Bulldogs scoreless in the second half, while putting up 16 points, but fell just short in the loss.

Concordia College at Samford:  Samford picked up 533 yards in total offense to in their 55-0 win over out-manned Concordia College.  The homecoming win addss a shutout victory to their 52-0 win over Stillman on Sept. 11 and a 45-0 win over Furman last Saturday.
