Scoring 35 points off UNCG's 23 turnovers was the key to Western Carolina's run away win over the Spartans in the opening conference game for both teams.
WCU won the contest 72-51 with a relentless defense that created 14 steals, rolling over a team that won at Virginia Tech last week and lost by just four to N.C. State earlier this week. A team that came into Ramsey expecting to make a statement win over the Catamounts. However, the statement as made by the Cats, putting the rest of the conference on notice that Western Carolina will contend for a championship.
“We really played good, good defense for most of the game,” said WCU head coach Larry Hunter after the game.
“They completely out-toughed us in every single way tonight,” UNCG head coach Wes Miller said. “It was a really disappointing effort for us as we were not very good and they were very good tonight. We were careless with the ball and when we put it in jeopardy, we were not very strong battling for the loose balls. We have to regroup here and use this loss to fuel us going forward.”
The Catamounts are now 10-1 against the Spartans in the last eleven games played and 17-4 in Cullowhee against UNCG and own a 27-16 overall record in the series.
