Lots of surprises, and no one ends the week looking like a real Southern Conference contender.
SoCon's #1 team, ASU traveled to Blacksburg, Va and immediately after kick off, wished they had a bye for week one, as the Mountaineers fell to VT, 66-13. SoCon's #2 team, Georgia Southern stayed in conference for week one, and traveled to Samford for the season's first conference game. Samford almost made it 4 in a row over the Eagles, but a 99 yard kick off return put GSU over the top, final score 31-17 Eagles. SoCon's #3 team, Wofford traveled in-state to Clinton, SC where Big South foe Presbyterian almost pulled off a major upset over the highly touted Terriers. In the end, Wofford squeaked by, 35-28. SoCon's supposed #4 team Chattanooga, traveled all the way to Lincoln, NE to pick up a nice payday and a loss to Nebraska, 40-7. Furman traveled to our season ending opponent, another Big South foe, Coastal Carolina and left with a loss 30-23, that spoiled Bruce Fowler's head coaching debuit with the Paladins. Vanderbilt easily handled Elon, 45-14 and the Citadel took it to Division II Jacksonville, 31-9, they are really beating their chests down in Charleston now.
