2011 Football - Appalachian State

Game #10. The Mountaineers of Appalachian State

A preseason preview of the Catamount's tenth opponent of the 2011 football season, the Appalachian State Mountaineers.

On November 12th, the Cats travel from Cullowhee over the North Carolina mountains to Boone, NC for the annual trophy game that's become known as the "Battle for the Old Mountain Jug".   This is the eight Southern Conference game and the tenth overall game of the season for the Catamounts.

The Catamounts and Mountaineers have played a total of 75 times since the first time they met in Boone, back in 1935.   Western owns a dismal 18-56-1 record against ASU, and is currently on a 6 game losing streak to the Mountaineers.  The Cats trail 9-18, in games played in Boone.

Head Coach Jerry Moore's Mountaineers enter the 2011 season the preseason favorite in both the SoCon and national polls, after ending the 2010 season with a 10-3 record and a piece of the 2010 Southern Conference title.   The Mountaineers return 45 lettermen, which includes 13 starters from a season ago: 5 on offense, 6 on defense, & 2 on special teams.

Senior DeAndre Presley returns to lead the Mountaineers spread offense.  Presley's favorite passing target, senior wide receiver Brian Quick also returns.   Presley & Quick highlight five returning starters on offense, four of which earned all-SoCon recognition in 2010.

Prediction: WCU - 21   ASU -  28

WCU Record: 6 -
4
