Western Carolina left-hander Bryan Sammons has been named the Southern Conference pitcher of the Week.

Sammons went 1-0 with a save and a 1.08 ERA last week against a pair of Power 5 opponents, throwing a combined 8 1/3 innings.

The senior southpaw tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless, hitless relief against the 20th-ranked Wolfpack on March 6, striking out two en route to earning his third career save and first since his freshman campaign.

Sammons also tossed seven innings to down Nebraska on Friday, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks, striking out eight, in the Cats’ series-opening win.

Bryan currently is the winningest active pitcher in the SoCon with 22 career victories. He is now 3-0 on the season and tied for eighth in WCU record books in career wins.

The award is Sammons’ second. He also earned a SoCon weekly honor last season.

Buchanan named SoCon Pitcher of the Week.

Courtney Buchanan achieved an ERA of 0.58 in 12 innings pitched last week against USC Upstate, North Florida, Mount Saint Mary’s and La Salle, surrendering just one earned run on the week. The Nebo, North Carolina, native struck out 12 batters, six of which came in the Catamounts’ 8-3 defeat over Mount Saint Mary’s on Saturday. Buchanan managed to post her first win of the season at North Florida on Friday after the Ospreys scored only two runs, neither of which was earned, in WCU’s 4-2 win in Jacksonville, Florida. The senior currently leads the SoCon in ERA (1.78) and is second in the conference in opposing batting average (.206).
