Baseball: Cats now in the eigth and final tournament seed

Freshman Jordan Smith pitched a complete game shutout Friday night against The Citadel. The win gave the Catamounts a Southern Conference series win, and combined with Greensboro's 3-0 win at Wofford, places the Catamounts into the eighth and final seed at next week's SoCon Tournament. This game was the second complete game shutout win for Smith, the first was a four-hit, 11-0 victory over Wofford on April 23, 2011. Congratulations to the Cats on making the Tournament.

Breaking News - Softball Head Coach Vacancy

We're being told that the Softball Head Coach position at Western Carolina is now vacant. Christine Hornak, in her 5th season at Western Carolina will not return as the Catamount Softball Head Coach for the 2012 season.  At this point, we are not sure if Coach Hornak resigned, or her contract was not renewed by Athletic Director Chip Smith.

Baseball: Will the Cats make the SoCon Tournament?

The Catamounts control their own destiny for winning the eight and final seed in the 2011 SoCon baseball tournament. The Cats can take sole possession of that last tournament spot by sweeping The Citadel, the defending SoCon Tournament Champs, regardless of what else happens this weekend in the SoCon. The Cats also hold the tie breaker over Wofford as they took two of three from the Terriers earlier in the season.

Despite boasting the second-highest team batting average in the league, .302, just behind Charleston's .304 and the SoCon's top hitter, Ross Heffley, who is currently hitting  a blistering .423 average, the Catamount have not enjoyed the success of last season.   The major culprit all season has been inconsistant pitching, as the Catamounts rank dead last in the conference with a 6.03 ERA. Pitching has not lived up to pre-season expectaions.

“If we can put it together on the mound, which I feel like we're capable of doing, and continue to score runs the way we have been, I feel like we can be dangerous this weekend,” WCU coach Bobby Moranda said. “And we could be dangerous next week (at the SoCon tournament).”

Pounding out 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Catamounts beat Appalachian State, 13-7 in Southern Conference baseball action in Boone, Monday afternoon.   This win kept in tact a record that has never allowed a 3 game sweep of the Catamounts by the Mountaineers.   With this win, the Cats move into a three-way tie with The Citadel and Wofford for eighth-place which is the cut-off for the conference tournament in Charleston, S.C. later this month.
