Saturday's SoCon Football Round-up (9-30-17)





Week #5 is now in the books, here's how the games played out.......




Western Carolina at Chattanooga
Catamount Football Derails Chattanooga in `Complete Team Win,' 45-7
Chattanooga, Tenn. -  Western Carolina forced three fumbles - two recovered in the end zone for touchdowns - and running back Corey Holloway eclipsed the 100-yard mark adding a pair of scores on the ground as the Catamounts halted an eight-game losing skid with a strong, 45-7, road win over Chattanooga Saturday night at Finley Stadium.

The Citadel at Samford
No. 23 Football Takes Down No. 11 The Citadel, 35-14
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 23rd-ranked Samford football team jumped out to a big early lead and cruised to a 35-14 win over 11th-ranked The Citadel in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon at Seibert Stadium. With the win, Samford improves to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in SoCon play, while The Citadel drops to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in league play. The win ended The Citadel's nine-game SoCon regular-season win streak, and it also marked Samford's ninth-straight home win, dating back to 2015.

ETSU at Furman
Furman Races Past ETSU, 56-35
GREENVILLE, S.C -- Senior wide receiver Logan McCarter hauled in seven passes for 178 yards and a touchdown, and the Sevierville, Tenn., native returned a kickoff 47 yards for another score to help Furman to a 56-35 victory over East Tennessee State in Southern Conference football action Saturday afternoon at Paladin Stadium. With the victory, Furman improves to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Conference. ETSU drops to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Paladins rushed for 308 yards and passed for 301 to post a season-high 609 yards of total offense. Quarterback P.J. Blazejowski completed 17-of-22 attempts for 301 yards and three touchdowns, while Kealand Dirks carried the ball 15 times for 100 yards. Darius Morehead added a career high 97 yards rushing on 13 carries, including a pair of touchdown runs.

VMI at Mercer
Mercer Throttles VMI, Earns First Conference Win
MACON, Ga. – Mercer totaled 575 yards and dominated the final three quarters of play en route to a 49-14 Southern Conference victory over VMI at Five Star Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Bears (2-3, 1-2 SoCon) notched their first conference win of the season largely due to the 575 total yards, which were the second most in a single game in program history. Mercer also tallied three interceptions – two by Stephen Houzah and one by Travonte' Easley, which was returned for a touchdown – to dominate the Keydets (0-5, 0-2 SoCon).

Wofford at Presbyterian
Football Wins 31-7 At Presbyterian
CLINTON, S.C. – On Saturday night, the Wofford College football team used big plays to come away with a 31-7 win over Presbyterian College at Bailey Memorial Stadium. The Terriers had four plays of over 50 yards and scored the final 17 points of the game to secure the victory. Wofford opens the season 4-0 overall, while the Blue Hose are 2-3 on the season.
