SoCon Basketball - Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017



Saturday opened conference play for 8 of the 10 SoCon teams, with ETSU at Mercer scheduled for Sunday afternoon. The big game of the day, had Wofford traveling to Greensboro to play UNCG. By Sunday afternoon, we'll have 5 teams in first place at 1-0, and 5 in last place at 0-1.

This weekend truly starts the Road to Asheville.


Saturday games.......

Wofford 67 - UNCG 71
Greensboro's Francis Alonso scored 26 points to lead UNCG over Wofford 71-67 on Saturday in a Southern Conference opener. The Terriers were coming off an upset at then-No. 5 North Carolina, and the loss snapped a five-game win streak by the Terriers. The Spartans have now won six of their last seven games.

Western Carolina 81 - The Citadel  79
Desmond Johnson led the Catamounts with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight steals (all career bests), as Mike Amius added 12 points, Williams 11 and Marc Gosselin scored nine points with 11 rebounds. Late in the game, Ashley Williams hit back-to-back 3-pointers as the Cats retook the lead with only a couple minutes remaining. The Cats then held on to take the 81-79 win over the Bulldogs in a Southern Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.

Furman 87 - VMI 57
The Paladin's scored 16 three-pointers on a 43-3 run to beat VMI 87-57 in Lexington during their  Southern Conference opener. Jordan Lyons scored 17 points with five 3s, John Davis III added 15 points. The Paladins hit 51 percent (31 of 61) overall, while the Keydets' hit 32 percent (18 of 57).

Chattanooga 56 - Samford 73
The Moc's Justin Coleman scored a career-high 28 points. and Eric Adams scored 11 points as Samford defeated Chattanooga 73-56 on Saturday night. Samford finished the first half on 17-of-24 shooting (71 percent) and Coleman scored 14 points before intermission and missed just 1 of his 8 shots as the Bulldogs cruised to the conference win.

ETSU 74 - Mercer 55
ETSU's Jalan McCloud scored 22 points as the Bucs ran away from Mercer 74-55 in Macon, Ga to open defense of its Southern Conference championship. ETSU  shot 57 percent from the floor (29-for-51) and made 10 of 18 from 3-point range (57 percent). Desonta Bradford and Bo Hodges each scored 12 for the Buccaneers.

The Cats open conference play with a victory over The Citadel




The Catamounts traveled to Charleston, SC to open the conference portion of the 2017-18 basketball season and picked up a hard-fought victory over the Citadel Bulldogs.

After pulling out to a 14 point lead early in the second half, the Cats held on to pull out an 81-79 win that was not settled until the final seconds of the game when the Bulldogs Zane Najdawi missed a game-tying layup with 1 second remaining on the clock.

Freshman Desmond Johnson led all scorers with 19 points, eight rebounds, and eight steals -- all three are career bests., off the bench for the Catamounts, while Tariq Simmons led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Mike Amius added 12 points, Ashley Williams 11 and Marc Gosselin scored nine points with 11 rebounds for the Cats.

The Bulldogs hit 13 of 44 three-point attempts (30%), while the Cats made only 4 threes off 20 attempts (20%).

SoCon Basketball - Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017



On 12-5-17 Wofford beat Georgia Tech by 3 in Spartanburg, last Saturday, ETSU dropped a 2 point loss to #10 Xavier, that same night, UNCG beat NC State in Raleigh, leading up to Wednesday's games against an ACC and SEC foe.  The SoCon went 1-1 on the night, almost making it 2-0. Wofford did pull off the upset of the season.   The SoCon is looking good this season.



Wofford 79  -  #5 North Carolina 75
The Terrier's Fletcher Magee scored 27 points as Wofford stunned No. 5 nationally ranked North Carolina in Chapel Hill, 79-75. Wofford's win snapped the reigning national champion's 23-game home winning streak. The Terriers led the entire second half but had to hold off UNC's late-game run for their first win over a top 25 ranked team. The Tar Heels got within a point twice and missed four 3-pointers for the tie in the final 6 minutes. But they never could overtake the Terriers, who counter-punched every time UNC made a run.

Furman 61 - Tennessee 66
The  Vol's Grant Williams scored a tiebreaking basket with 54 seconds left as No. 21 Tennessee squeaked by Furman 66-61 to snap the Paladins' five-game winning streak. The Paladins were led by Devin Sibley with 22 points.

SoCon Basketball - Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017




It was a dreadful night for the SoCon on Tuesday, of the 5 games scheduled, the conference only picked up 1 win out of a schedule where at least 3 or 4 of the games were winnable.  The Big South went 2-0 against the SoCon reversing Sunday's losses. 




ETSU 81 - Detroit Mercy 73
IN the SoCon only win on Tuesday, the Bucs' Desonta Bradford scored 21 points on as East Tennessee State led for the final 12 minutes in an 81-73 win over Detroit Mercy.

The Citadel 65 - Ohio State 94
The Buckeyes ran past the Bulldogs on Tuesday, 65-94. The Citadel's Kaiden Rice had 14 points off the bench for the Bulldogs.

High Point 72 - Western Carolina 61
The Panther's Andre Fox and Jahaad Proctor scored 16 points apiece to led High Point past Western Carolina,  72-61.  Mile Amius led the Cats with 13 points.

UNCA 67 - UNCG 60
Asheville's  MaCio Teague scored 25 points to lead the Bulldogs past  UNCG. 67-60. Asheville held the Spartans scoreless over the final five minutes in the win.  Marvin Smith led the Spartans with 13 points.

Mercer 79 - Alabama 80
Demetre Rivers led Mercer with 24 points and Ria'n Holland contributed 21. Holland just missed a 25-footer at the buzzer that could have won it for Mercer after the Tide let a six-point lead drop to 1 in the final 11 seconds.

Newsome selected first team All-America by STATS

Western Carolina senior tailback Detrez Newsome was selected as first-team All-America by STATS FCS. Newsome, who led the Southern Conference in rushing average and paced both the league and nation in all-purpose yards per game, was selected as an all-purpose back.

SoCon Basketball - Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017



The SoCon had a good day, winning 3 of 5 scheduled games on Sunday.  With a sweep of the Mountain Invitational, the SoCon put up a 2-0 record vs. the Big South.


Western Carolina 76 - Asheville 72
Freshman Marcus Thomas scored a career and game-high 21 points while junior Mike Amius put up 19 points as the Cats held off Asheville in the night-cap of the Mountain Invitational held at the US Celluar Center in Asheville.

Wofford 70 - High Point 57
Fletcher Magee scored a game-high 27 points, making six from beyond the arc, and hitting 7 of 7 free throws to lead the Terriers past the High Point Panthers in the opening game of the Mountain Invitational. As a team, the Terriers hit 9 three-pointers and made 15 of 18 free throw attempts. 

Furman 90 - UNCW 84
Devin Sibley scored 24 points to lead the Paladins to a 90-84 win over the Seahawks in Wilmington. Furman hit 13 of 26 three-pointers and made 15 of 25 free throw attempts.

Chattanooga 76 - Tennessee Tech 82
Aleksa Jugovic scored 21 points to led Tenn Tech to a 76-82 victory over visiting Chattanooga Saturday. 

Mercer 85 - La Salle 95
La Salle pulled out to a 49-29 first-half lead over the Bears, then held on in the second half to defeat Mercer. The Bear's Ria'n Holland scored a game-high 33 points for the Bears, hitting 10 of 19 field goals and went 7 of 7 from the free throw line.

SoCon Basketball - Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017


Only 3 out-of-conference games were scheduled for Saturday, and the SoCon looked good in all three, but finished the day with a 2-1 record, almost taking out the #10 team in the nation.  





UNCG 81 - NC State 76

The Spartans surprised NC State with a 5 point victory over the Wolfpack, the first win ever over State for the Spartans. Francis Alonso scored 17 to lead the Spartans. 



Point 66 - The Citadel 110

The Bulldogs rolled over NAIA Point University. Tyonn Stuckey had 21 points,5 rebounds and 5 assists for the Bulldogs, followed by Alex Reed with 18 points.


ETSU 66 - Xavier 68

The Bucs lead #10 Xavier most of the game, leading at one time by 22 points in the second half. However, the Musketeers rallied in the second half to take the lead with 10 seconds remaining in the game.

A new look for the Ramsey Center


Gone will be the black glass look of the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center, which will have a much different look after the Board of Trustees’endorsement of a $3.9 million exterior makeover.

With that approval now out of the way, design work can move forward, with bidding to take place in the spring. The exterior construction makeover will take about 12 months once started.

SoCon Basketball - Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017


There was 6 out of conference games scheduled for the first Saturday in December, and SoCon teams came out 3-3 on the day.  





UNCG 76 - Liberty 75

Francis Alonso scored a career-high 36 points and hit the game-winner with 2.4 seconds left in the third overtime as UNC Greensboro beat Liberty 76-75 on Saturday.

Radford 63 - VMI 50

Radford's Ed Polite Jr. had 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Devonnte Holland added 10 points and eight boards, as Radford beat VMI 63-50 on Saturday.

UMBC 98 - The Citadel 72

Maryland-Baltimore County rolled over The Citadel 98-72 as the Receiver's K.J. Maura scored 21 points with seven assists and six rebounds, leading six other UMBC players in double-figure scoring on Saturday afternoon in Charleston.

Tennessee Tech 50 - Furman 64

The Paladin's John Davis III scored 16 points, while Daniel Fowler added 12, as Furman beat Tennessee Tech 64-50 on Saturday, ending the Golden Eagles six-game win streak.

Mercer 81 - Memphis 83

With time running out in the second overtime, the  Tiger's Jeremiah Martin drove to the basket, drawing a foul, then made both free throws as Memphis eked past Mercer 83-81 on Saturday in a heartbreaker for the Bears.

Tennessee-Martin 63 - Chattanooga 66

The Moc's Makale Foreman hit a late 3-pointer, then made four free throws down the stretch holding off UTM, to give Chattanooga a 66-63 win over the Skyhawks on Saturday.
