Saturday's SoCon Football Round-up (9-17-16)

Week number three is now in the books. This week had the first conference upset, but the remainder of the games turned out much as expected. The SoCon remains undefeated in FCS out of conference play.

Western Carolina at East Tennessee State
Thanks to an epic comeback, the Bucs overcame an 18-point, first-half deficit to score 24 unanswered points, taking the lead in the second half and defeating Western Carolina 34-31 Saturday afternoon in the Food City Bucs at Bristol game at Bristol Motor Speedway.
In the Bucs first Southern Conference game since 2003, an ETSU program-record crowd of 13,863 fans looked on as ETSU improved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play. Meanwhile, Western Carolina dropped to 1-2, 0-1. This marked the second straight time the Bucs took down a team who was receiving votes in the STATS FCS Top 25 poll.   -    Bucs race past Western Carolina at BMS, 34-31

Johnson C. Smith at Wofford
The Wofford College football team defeated Johnson C. Smith 59-0 on Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers started slow and had a 17-0 lead at the half before scoring 42 points in the second half, which included three defensive touchdowns. Wofford moves to 2-1 on the season, while Johnson C. Smith is 0-3.     -    Football Wins 59-0 Over Johnson C. Smith

Tennessee Tech at Mercer
John Russ and Sam Walker scored twice, Cole Fisher hit a school record 49-yard field goal and Mercer scored 24 of the final 31 points in the game as the Bears rallied for a 34-27 win over Tennessee Tech in front of 9,772 fans at Five Star Stadium Saturday.
Mercer (1-2) could have had the final four scores in the game overall but a controversial call on a ruled fumble by Walker led to a touchdown on a fumble recovery for Tennessee Tech (1-2). The call ignited Mercer, which blocked the extra point attempt, and pushed the Bears to prevent the Golden Eagles from reaching the end zone in the final quarter.   -    Mercer Rallies for 34-27 Win over Tennessee Tech

Head coach Brent Thompson is the second head coach at The Citadel to start his career 3-0 joining Ralph Foster who won his first four games in 1906-07.   -    Bulldogs 3-0 for Ninth Time in Program History
