The Series: Western and High point have met a total of 67 times on the hardwood, with the Panthers holding a 44-23 advantage in the series. The Panthers have won the last five games in the series, however, the teams have only played twice since 1970. The Cats last won in High Point back in 1968.

The High Point Panthers were chosen as the favorite to win the Big South Conference for the 2015-16 season in preseason voting, and has won or shared the last three regular-season Big South Basketball titles.

The Panthers return three starters among their 11 letter-winners, and 76 percent of the team’s scoring and rebounding output from a season ago. The Panthers are led by preseason Big South Player of the Year John Brown, a 2015 preseason All America selection.

HPU is coming off a 2014-15 season in which the team set program records for wins (23), Big South wins (13), and road wins (9). Head coach Scott Cherry is 96-91 in six seasons with HPU, including a 62-42 (.596) mark in league play. Like the Catamounts, the Panthers protect the home court. High Point has posted a 22-7 (.814) record in the Millis Center since the start of the 2013-14 season, and has won 19 of their past 21 home games and have not lost a non-conference home game since a setback to James Madison on Dec. 14, 2014.

The Panthers are 2-1 on the young season, picking up a win over Drexel of the CAA on Wednesday. Like WCU, High Point opened the season with a loss. The Panthers dropped a 77-73 loss to Texas Tech, then returned to High Point where they dominated Div-III  NC Wesleyan by a final score of 93-69.
