The Catamounts look to bounce back from Friday’s loss at Cincinnati as they renew the regional mountain rivalry with UNC Asheville in the Ramsey Center.
The Bulldogs are coming off a loss to Tennessee, 82-78, as the Cats fell 97-72 at Cincinnati in the opener for both teams.
The Cats and Dogs have met 48 times, and the Cats lead the series 27-21, and won the last two meetings in 2013 and 2014. The last Asheville win in the series came in 2012 , a 71-61 victory in Asheville.
The Bulldogs are young and enter the season with nine of their 15 players either freshmen or sophomores. Asheville finished last season 15-16 overall and 10-8 in Big South, they were picked to finish seventh this year in the BS preseason poll.
“I think we have a fun and interesting mix of veteran players and newcomers, with five freshmen and a transfer, John Cannon, who is eligible this year,” McDevitt stated. “Then you look at Will Weeks, who is coming back after being limited last season due to injury and, the way we look at it, it’s almost like we have seven new players.”
What Asheville lacks in experience it gains in depth and flexibility. 10 players are listed as guards on the roster, including three 6’5” freshmen. Redshirt-junior Will Weeks’ has returned to action, after a knee injury cost him a year and a half of game action. Weeks 25-point performance against Tennessee, was just off his career high of 27 points
