Brown to Quarterback for the 2014 season

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that senior Garrett Brown is moving to his natural position of quarterback for the upcoming football season at Western Carolina.

“I feel like going into the start of practice that I am going to be competing for at least the backup job and maybe the starter,” Brown said. “I’m excited. I always felt like quarterback was my best position, and I’ve always liked having the ball in my hands and making plays,” continued Brown.

Brown will join junior Troy Mitchell and freshman Jackson McDonald in competition for the starting position during the summer practice starting August 1, 2014.  Mitchell started 14 games in the last two season, sharing the duties with former team mate Eddie Sullivan.

In 2013, Brown appeared in eight games on the season, starting the season at wide receiver before converting to running back midway through the season. He rushed six times for 26 yards on the season, carrying the ball a season-high three times and 17 yards at Auburn.. Brown led the team with eight punt returns for 60 yards, averaging 7.5 yards per return, and finished with 86 all-purpose yards on the year.

At Erwin High School, Brown was named the 2010 Asheville Citizen-Times All-Western North Carolina Football Player of the Year after accounting for a WNC-record 55 touchdowns his senior year. Brown set a Buncombe County record for passing yards in 2010, amassing 3,429 yards and was selected to the NCPreps.com 3-A All-State football team as a quarterback.

Purple & Gold wishes the best of luck to Garrett Brown and that he can quickly return to form.
